Google Fi is said to drop cellular in the US, leaving T-Mobile as the newest network

Google Fi, the tech company’s mobile virtual network operator, previously based its service on three different carriers for subscribers to cycle through in search of the best signal. While that was down to two after the combined T-Mobile and Sprint networks merged, that’s now limited to one after Google reportedly dropped US Cellular as the official network.

Google Fi support supposedly told users US Cellular was going away last week, according to Google Fi Reddit post. Google Fi Google Fi users can still take advantage of the US Cellular network, but only while roaming, for which users are still not charged a fee, Google representative 9to5Google said.

However, having a US cellular network will come in handy in areas not covered by T-Mobile’s network.

US Cellular and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This insect urinates at high speed using “butt flash” and super thrusting

Everyone pees and just about everything. It turns out that some things do just that by pushing the fluid away from her back at an extremely high speed with an anal pen.

This unusual scenario sums up the work of researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology on how a leaf-jumping insect called the glass-winged sharpshooter rests. Although it may seem esoteric, what they discovered could one day provide technological advancements like quickly getting water out of sensitive electronics.

The investigation of the sniper secretion process began the way many scientific excursions begin: pure curiosity. Saad Bahmleh, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, observed that an insect would repeatedly form a perfectly round droplet of liquid on its tail and then shoot it away at a blurring speed.

“Little is known about the fluid dynamics of secretion, despite its influence on the morphology, energy, and behavior of animals,” Bhamla said in the current situation. “We wanted to see if this little insect came up with any clever engineering or physics innovations in order to urinate in this way.”

Studying the insect with high-speed video and microscopes revealed that the slinger possesses a specific part that enables its impressive urination performance: an anal pen that Bhamla called a “butt flasher”.

Bhamla compares this feature to the flippers on a pinball machine that a sniper uses to shoot drops of urine at an incredible speed. Flash can accelerate liquid more than 10 times the speed of supercars.

“We realized that this insect had actually evolved a spring and a lever like a catapult, and that it could use those tools to repeatedly hurl drops of urine at great acceleration,” explained Elio Shalita, a graduate student in bioengineering who worked with Bhamla.

Team search is Published in this week’s issue of Nature Communications.

When the researchers recorded the speed of the streaming droplets, they noticed that the droplets of urine moved through the air faster than the flick of the fly that released it. This indicates the presence of superthrust, a phenomenon that has not yet been observed in natural systems.

Hyperthrust occurs when an elastic projectile obtains an energy boost by synchronizing pressure and firing timing. One way to visualize this is to imagine a diver launching off a springboard at just the right moment to get the maximum boost from the spring’s impact. The sniper pen appears to do something similar by compressing the droplet before launching, storing additional energy via surface tension in the liquid which then gives it a speed boost when pressed.

Researchers believe that the urination flick is the most efficient way for cannibals to process the massive amount of plant sap they drink each day to survive – up to 300 times their body weight.

Impulsive urination helps and helps you

Research into the pigeon habits of shooters could have some direct benefits for humans because the insect is a major pest causing millions of dollars in damage to crops, especially in vineyards and citrus fruits in California and Florida. Species are expected to spread as the climate changes, and this new finding may make it easier to track the spread of species and inform insights that help control their reproduction.

However, engineers may also learn from sniper biology and develop new systems for removing water from wearable electronic devices.

said Miriam Ashley Ross, director of programs at the US National Science Foundation, which partially funded the work. “The efficient method these tiny insects have developed to solve the problem may lead to bio-inspired solutions for solvent removal in small manufacturing applications such as electronics or for rapid removal of water from structurally complex surfaces.”

It’s crazy things we can discover from taking just a second to contemplate a drop of insect urine.

“This work reinforces the idea that curiosity-driven science has value,” Schlita said. “And the fact that we’ve discovered something so intriguing—the supercharged propulsion of droplets in a biological system and heroic feats of physics that have applications in other fields—makes it even more amazing.”

Watch out, eSIMs – phones of the future could use more efficient ‘iSIMs’

In addition to physical SIM cards that store your carrier and contacts subscription information, for the past few years phone makers have been offering eSIMs built into phones to easily switch between providers without swapping a physical card. But chipmaker Qualcomm has a new way to exchange service digitally: iSIM, or embedded SIM, which could be a faster and cheaper alternative.

While eSIMs are installed on the silicon somewhere inside the phones, iSIMs are located directly in the processor, and should similarly let you digitally manage carrier profiles on the phone. According to Qualcomm, this results in lower costs and better efficiency, since iSIMs need fewer components and take up less space. That could make iSIMs more attractive to cheaper phones and other connected devices, such as tablets and wearables, the company said. press release.

Since iSIMs consume much less power than eSIMs, they would be ideal for IoT devices, according to a blog post by the cybersecurity firm. Thaleswhich co-developed iSIMs with Qualcomm.

The first chip to use iSIMs is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. But Qualcomm hasn’t indicated whether higher-end Android phones that already shipped with the chip, like the Samsung Galaxy S23 series or the OnePlus 11, will be able to use iSIM.

Qualcomm did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

New Childhood Obesity Guidelines Say It’s a Disease That Needs Treatment

As a teenager, Sean Rutherford was an insomniac. So between midnight and 5 a.m., Rutherford would play Dido and Sarah McLachlan on a Walkman while they walked the entirety of their apartment complex in Lafayette, Louisiana. For an occasional break, they’d sit by the pool. But then it was back to pacing the complex.

Now 35, a professional medium and TikTok creator in New Orleans, Rutherford points to these moments as one example of an active lifestyle led by a kid in a big body that stayed big. Throughout childhood, Rutherford was dragged from pediatrician to nutritionist to dietitian. The food restrictions their mother imposed under medical guidance, combined with the general lack of effective medical treatment or results from any diet, damaged Rutherford’s relationship with food and left them with the feeling there was something irreparably wrong with them.

“My relationship with food became my number one reason why I think it was really problematic,” Rutherford said of the advice and health care they received as a child. “I find science and medicine doesn’t take into account that everyone’s body is different.”

All the fad diets — including keto, which was more effective than the others but had to be stopped because it became unaffordable to sustain, as well as two Weight Watchers stints before age 21 — were similarly unhelpful to Rutherford as an adult. Today, they’re looking for the same answers as when they were a kid, coming up against the same barriers in health care and navigating the same thorny conversations about the size of their body.

“You’re shut out of doors,” Rutherford said of their experience at the doctor’s office. “You get your thyroid checked once, they find out there’s nothing wrong — they never want to check it again,” Rutherford said. “They don’t want to run deeper tests, they don’t want to do anything.”

In January, for the first time in 15 years, the American Academy of Pediatrics released treatment guidelines for obesity in children, recommending earlier intervention, including obesity medications and surgery in certain cases. This constitutes a dramatic shift away from the “watchful waiting” approach that delayed medical treatment for weight loss and encouraged more lifestyle monitoring by health care providers.

The new guidelines also build on the medical community’s precedent for treating obesity as a chronic disease, which has divided expert and public opinion on what it means to have a higher body mass index, as well as whether treating it as a disease lessens the burden on children or piles onto the bias against bigger bodies that already exists in their schools, at their pediatricians’ offices, on TV and even in their homes.

The AAP’s new guidelines

The AAP updated its guidelines for pediatricians to include new information and recommendations for weight-loss treatment, including drugs and surgery in some cases. Bariatric or metabolic surgery may now be recommended for some children aged 13 and up. Kids as young as 12 years old can be prescribed medications for weight loss, which are growing in number, in tandem with other care that should address the long list of social determinants of health that can influence the size of a child’s body.

In short, the new guidelines discuss obesity as a disease with biological, socioeconomic and environmental factors, as opposed to the stigmatizing idea that obesity is a “reversible consequence of personal choices,” as the authors write in the clinical practice guidelines. The guidance, which was published in the AAP’s scientific journal Pediatrics, also acknowledges a pervasive stigma against children in bigger bodies by the very providers that treat them.

But some critics say the guidelines may end up adding to the same stigma they call out, and that pediatricians are ill-equipped to carry out the AAP’s recommendations for treatment without causing more harm. The health care system at large, too, may not be the best tool for addressing the socioeconomic, racial and other inequities that the AAP authors describe.

“The health care system is an important component of connecting families to resources,” Kate Bauer, associate professor of nutrition sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public, told Futurity. But available resources might be “just a Band-Aid,” Bauer told the publication, “and an insufficient one at best.”

The authors of the guidelines based the recommendations on evidence of effective treatments for reducing the risk of health conditions associated with obesity, including an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and other health conditions. Dr. Steven Abelowitz, a pediatrician and medical director of the Coastal Kids medical group, said the new recommendations are based in science and are “without a doubt, the most useful objective data we have.” However, Dr. Abelowitz said, “I’m not convinced in the first meeting you need to recommend medications or surgery.”

The guidance has garnered a lot of backlash from the public. Media headlines and op-eds criticizing the intense recommendations for children include the words “appalling” and “terrify,” in part over fear of negative impacts on children’s and teens’ mental health, which is declining at an alarming rate.

Abelowitz said he understands the conclusions the AAP came to, even if they were jarring. Rates of diabetes in children are rising, as are the number of children with a high BMI, and the interwoven structural and societal barriers that contribute to high BMIs, such as lack of access to nutritional foods, show little, if any, progress of improving.

“It’s easy to be a critic,” Abelowtiz said of the negative headlines. “But one has to consider: What are the next steps when all else fails?”

‘Not just thin, white females’: An eating disorder epidemic

Another key part of the guidelines is their “intensive” recommendations around exercise and food in children with higher BMIs. Part of the AAP’s behavioral and lifestyle treatment guidance, for example, advises “direct meal preparation” sessions and a certain number of “nutrition, physical activity, and behavior change lessons” over a period of months — 26 hours of face-to-face treatment over three to 12 months, for example.

Dr. Katherine Hill, a pediatrician and vice president of Equip, a telehealth service for eating disorder treatment, said that one good thing about the guidance in her eyes is “the acknowledgment that it’s not the child’s fault if they fall into the category of obesity.” The bad, however, is that the guidelines “inadequately” address the risk of eating disorders in children who will be treated for their weight.

“There’s pretty strong evidence that shows that when children or adolescents are prescribed diets, it increases risk of both eating disorders and obesity,” Hill said. One review, for example, found that treating a child’s chronic illness with diet was associated with risk of developing an eating disorder or disordered eating pattern. Studies have also found that adolescents who are overweight are more likely to engage in eating disorder behavior, like inducing vomiting or using laxatives, than their peers.

Eating disorders — the most common being anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating — have been on the rise post-pandemic. And they affect people with all body sizes. Hill says that in eating disorder in-patient units, where people stay during treatment, “anywhere from 25% to 45% of young people” are in a larger body.

“We’ve also seen an epidemic of patients with eating disorders who live in larger bodies — particularly over the past several years,” she said. “So it made me concerned that these guidelines would inadvertently lead to an increased rate of eating disorders in this population.”

“That’s something that a lot of people don’t realize — that eating disorders affect all people, not just thin, white females,” Hill explained.

At its most mild, fatphobia in health care
means well-intentioned people give bad advice that patients didn’t ask for. At its worst, children are shamed for their body size and praised for developing eating disorders. The latter is one of the most common experiences among Hill’s patients, who might have developed an obsession or restrictive eating pattern, only to show up to their next doctor’s appointment and be celebrated when their doctor sees the number on the scale drop.

“One of the reasons there’s been this epidemic of people in larger bodies having eating disorders is because they tend to get positive reinforcement from all of society — including their medical providers — in the early phases of weight loss,” Hill said. “And that can sort of trigger this spiraling effect where they start to lose weight extremely quickly, and they’re still getting positive reinforcement,” she added.

Is ‘obesity’ a disease or an offensive term?

Most adults in the US are overweight, according to an estimate by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which defines “overweight” as having a BMI between 25 and 30. This is a different classification than the one for obesity, which the CDC, as well as the World Health Organization, define as a chronic medical condition of having a BMI of 30 or higher

For children and teens, the AAP and CDC define obesity as having a BMI at or above the 95th percentile, which includes more than 14 million US kids and teens. “Severe obesity” is defined by the AAP as a BMI of at least 120% greater than the 95% percentile. These definitions are key to the medication and surgery aspect of the AAP’s guidance, which reserves medication evaluations for children 12 and up with obesity, and reserves surgery evaluations for children 13 and up with severe obesity.

BMI has been criticized as an inaccurate marker for health, as it doesn’t take into account someone’s frame, muscle mass and other factors and does not predict individual health in a fool-proof way. It also doesn’t account for the role fitness and physical activity play in overall health, regardless of weight. In instances of the “obesity paradox,” people with a higher BMI have fared better against severe disease outcomes in some instances than lower-weight people. This suggests that weight and health are connected in a more nuanced way than both medical providers and the general public have been taught.

Not everyone agrees that a high BMI should be classified as a disease or require treatment in itself, including many in the fat acceptance community who view fatness, in part, as one form of bodily diversity. And not everyone is comfortable with the use of the word “obese” in the first place, including people who have experienced its negative connotations firsthand.

“Many people that I work with who have lived experience in eating disorders — where they’ve had their own eating disorder, they’ve had loved ones with an eating disorder — consider the term ‘obesity’ to be an expletive because of the harm that has been caused either to them directly or a loved one,” Hill said.

Rutherford doesn’t particularly like the term “obese,” and definitely not “morbidly obese,” which is considered an outdated term by many in the medical community as well. (You wouldn’t say someone is “chronically diabetic.”) But Rutherford supports the view of obesity as a disease, because classifying it as such has the potential to protect children from harassment over their weight, Rutherford says. Embracing obesity as a health condition forces it under the same considerations by the American Disability Act as other common mental and physical health conditions, including major depressive disorder and diabetes.

Basically, teachers would understand that Rutherford was fat and needed medication “because of disease, not laziness,” they say.

“My childhood would have been so different,” they said. “These things would’ve had my back instead of being 14 years old and having my own back.”

The thorny discussion around classifying obesity as a disease is just one example of how definitions can shift over time, and the list of physical or mental states that qualify as a “disease” is far from static. There’s also an ongoing conversation around mental illness being just like any other illness, and whether that better-serves affected people or inhibits them.

Looking outward from a culture obsessed with weight

Tigress Osborn, the chair of the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance, supports a fat person’s right to do whatever they want with their body — including lose weight. But she warns that the choice to do so is never a neutral one. Outside pressures to lose weight come in many forms, like being unable to fit in a movie theater seat or being less likely to get a fair ruling in court, not just wanting to slim down.

“These are not choices that are made in a vacuum,” Osborn said.

These barriers to a fair life, combined with the imperfect notion of BMI and the value of body diversity, means that obesity isn’t a disease in her eyes. Rather, the urgency should be redirected to society to improve the everyday access issues that prohibit fat people from being accepted exactly as they are.

“Just protect fat kids,” she said.

But Osborn recognizes the relief someone can feel by subscribing to the idea that their body is large because they have a disease. “It is life-changing to a lot of fat people to be told for the first time in their lives, ‘this is not your fault,'” she added.

Our culture has been grappling with an idea of beauty and thinness that not only targets adults with weight-loss medications or ineffective nutritional guidance, but also exposes children to the idea that in order to be seen and respected, you have to be thin. And while this is an idea so deep under our skin it will take effort to peel back, there have been steps, including more serious considerations about the effects of anti-fat bias as well as some change to how bigger bodies are represented in media

One very simple step in progressing the conversation, according to Rutherford, is to stop interjecting with a “no, you’re beautiful” when they call themselves fat.

“I know I’m a pretty bitch, but I’m also fat,” Rutherford said. “Those are not mutually exclusive.”

The White House sets a deadline for deleting TikTok from government agencies

The White House has set a deadline for government employees to delete TikTok from federal agencies as national security concerns about the short-form video app continue to grow. Federal agencies will have 30 days to remove the social media app from phones and systems, and block devices from accessing TikTok online, According to the memorandum of February 27 From the Office of Management and Budget.

“This directive is part of the administration’s continued commitment to securing our digital infrastructure and protecting the security and privacy of the American people,” said Chris DeRocha, chief federal information security officer at the Office of Management and Budget. Reuters I mentioned earlier on the 30 day deadline.

TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, is facing scrutiny over concerns that the app could pose national security threats, including concerns that the company could give the Chinese government access to US users’ data. In November, FBI Director Christopher Wray The app said They can be used “to control the collection of data on millions of users, to control a recommendation algorithm, which can be used for influence operations if they so choose, or to control software on millions of devices.” FCC Commissioner Brian Carr last year The application is called An advanced monitoring tool.

In December, US lawmakers Application blocking from government agencies. Other countries – including CanadaAnd the European Union and Taiwan – they took similar steps.

The ban could escalate already high tensions between China and the United States. On Tuesday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning He said in a press conference that the United States “exaggerates the expansion of the concept of national security and misuses state power to suppress foreign companies.”

“How unsure and fearless can the world’s largest superpower be with a youth-favorite app like this?” she said.

TikTok has more than 100 million monthly users in the US and is especially popular among teens, competing with platforms like Facebook-owned Instagram and Google-owned YouTube. About 67% of American teens say they use TikTok, according to a 2022 survey by Pew Research Center.

US politicians, including those in the Trump administration, have tried to ban TikTok before. TikTok’s increasing popularity in the US has raised concerns about the data the app collects. In December, Forbes reported that Tik Tok Firing employees who tracked the physical locations of journalists covering the company. US lawmakers are also proposing legislation to address national security concerns about TikTok. It is expected to present the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs on Tuesday invoice That would make it easier for the Biden administration to ban TikTok. The committee chairman introduced Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas Bill last week.

Tik Tok It did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but the company has previously said it does not share data with the Chinese government. The company also told lawmakers about a $1.5 billion plan to reorganize TikTok’s US business, The Wall Street Journal reported in January. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew He is scheduled to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on March 23.

WrestleMania 2023: Match card, how to watch, start times

in the courtroom We found out The main match at WrestleMania 39 will be WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns defending his titles against Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes. As we head down the road to WrestleMania, more and more matches are being added to the card. Some of them look exciting – others are more baffling.

Let’s take the confusing first. On Monday, it was announced that “The Beast” Brock Lesnar, arguably the promotion’s second-biggest star, will be taking on…Omos? It’s an odd use of Lesnar, but at least we’ll get an amazing F5 out of it.

Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championship rivalries have been announced, both of which are much easier to promote. SmackDown Champion Charlotte Flair will defend her gold medal against Rhea Ripley, while Raw’s Asuka will challenge Bianca Belair for her title.

These are the only bouts officially scheduled for the show to date. Expect a conditional match between Edge and Finn Balor to finally cap off the Edge vs. Judgment Day storyline that began at last year’s WrestleMania, as well as the long-awaited showdown between Rey Mysterio and his son Dominik. Logan Paul vs. Seth Rollins is also official.

Then there is the question of what to do with Sami Zayn. It looks like a tag team bout pitting Zayn and Frenkie Kevin Owens against The Usos is the most likely.

Match card so far

WWE Universal Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Cody Rhodes, SmackDown Women’s Championship: Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Rhea Ripley, Raw Women’s Championship: Bianca Belair (c) vs. Asuka, Brock Lesnar vs. Omus.

How to watch WrestleMania 39: Peacock, WWE Network, Binge

As you probably know by now, Peacock is the new home of WWE’s pay-per-view. The WWE Network has its core moved to NBC’s Peacock Broadcasting Service, and this is where you’ll go to watch the Royal Rumble 2023. Peacock has three tiers: Free, Premium, and Premium Plus. To watch WWE content, you will need a Premium subscription. The good news is that it will cost you $5 a month, which is less than $10 for the WWE Network.

Just like the WWE Network that was absorbed by Peacock in the US migrated to Foxtel’s Binge streaming service in Australia, so Aussies will need to sign up there to watch WrestleMania. If you’re in the UK, you’ll be watching Royal Rumble 2023 on the WWE Network as usual.

WrestleMania start times

WrestleMania 2023 takes place at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 1-2. For those without direct tickets, it starts at 5pm PT / 8pm ET on both days. Wrestling fans across the pond will have to stay up late, as the show kicks off on both nights at 1am UK time. In Australia, WrestleMania begins at 10am AEST on Sundays and Mondays.

This NFT Ape Ape key just sold for $1.6 million

NFTs are down, but they’re not out yet. Back to the upside of 2021, when exotic NFTs sold out due to bewildering prices, NFT for the key It sold for $1.6 million (1,000 ether) on Monday. As with most big money NFT deals in recent months, the key has to do with the Bored Ape Yacht Club.

yoga labs, The company behind BAYCFor the past two months, he has been experimenting with merging games and narratives in NFT mint. The story of “The Trial of Jimmy the Monkey” began in December with a (very) short film. You see Jimmy unlocking the space-time continuum by taking the “atomic shit”. Emerging from the gate is an anachronistic monkey who presents a mysterious key, one that Jimmy accidentally swallows. He runs to the bathroom to get her out, but instead passes out.

This led to the game, an infinite runner called Dookey Dash. Owners of Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs were airdropped from a Sewer Pass NFT that allowed them to play Dookey Dash, where they, as a monkey, traverse through the sewer system to try to find Jimmy and retrieve the key from his belly button. To Real Madrid. (the Pass sanitation NFTs themselves Sold for Thousands of Dollars: There’s been $65 million in volume since it was airdropped to BAYC holders on Jan. 16.)

Dookey Dash is set as a three-week contest. Leaderboards closed on February 8, with unspecified rewards awarded based on high scores. Unsurprisingly, one of the esports professionals has the highest score – an 18-year-old Briton named Kyle “Mongraal” Jackson, famous for his Fortnite streams. On February 15th, Mongraal’s Sewer Pass NFT was turned into a key, the key from Jimmy’s butt.

On Monday, Mongraal announced its decision to sell its main NFT for 1,000 ether, currently worth $1.6 million. “You have agreed to sell the key for 1,000 ETH to @AdamWeitsman,” The esports professional tweeted. “A very nice guy and a pleasure to sell to.”

NFTs, or non-perishable tokens, are tokens on the blockchain that certify ownership of a digital good. For the digital, they hope, it will be a deed to a piece of land. Most NFT sales are for profile pictures, like the Bored Ape Yacht Club, which looks a bit like the digital equivalent of a Rolex (or more often, bought for speculation).

Jimmy the Monkey Trial is a multi-stage trial, with the Dookey Dash and the main NFT being just the first part. Yoga has hinted that it all leads to a new pool, but has yet to say what that pool will look like or how it will fit into the main NFT. Probably He will call Othersidethe upcoming metaverse MMORPG company.

The subject of a speculative frenzy for most of 2021, NFT values began to slide along with the cryptocurrency last May as the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates to fight inflation. Other speculative assets have also declined: Tesla and Netflix are both down about 50% from their 2021 peaks. Cryptocurrency critics see the fall of bitcoin, ether and NFT as the beginning of the end, while proponents bet prices will reach new highs once the economy stabilizes.

Synopsis for The Last of Us Episode 7: Absolutely heartbreaking

The last of us Episode 7 has landed on HBO and HBO Max SundayFollowers of Ellie and Joel (Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal) after a bad encounter with a thief Joel left Stabbed and near death.

She interrupts their quest to bring Ellie to the rebel group known as the Fireflies. They hope to restore society by replicating her immunity fungal infection This turned the world into deadly monsters.

Before that, you must stop Ellie’s Joel from bleeding to death. The situation reminds her of a dark moment from her past that sticks closely to a memorable part of the game. Let’s jump into SPOILERS for the HBO adaptation Sony PlayStation game.

a strained friendship

Most of the episode takes place in the time before Ellie and Joel meet, when she is living (and not getting along) with other children in the custody of FEDRA, the federal disaster response agency, which runs quarantine areas with the remnants of the United States. army.

After she gets into a conflict with a peer, a FEDRA officer presents her with alternate visions of her future in the district: keep messing around, end up munching on bad duties, and possibly die in a random accident. Or… show a little discipline, be an officer, and live a fairly comfortable life. She chooses the latter, but she doesn’t seem wild about it.

Ellie posters include one for the 2000 box office disaster Red Planet (not to be confused with a very similar mission to Mars from the same year) and the 1987 sci-fi comedy Innerspace.

HBO

After staying up late reading an issue of Savage Starlight (a fictional comic book series for you can be collected in the game), her sleep is interrupted by runaway best friend Riley (Storm Reed). It is revealed that Riley has given up FEDRA sponsorship to the dissident Fireflies, but is still visiting to recruit Ellie.

“Come with me for a few hours and have the best night of your life,” commands her boyfriend.

Hell yeah.

Eighties style fun

After a brief stop to check on a dead man, down a bit of pre-apocalyptic alcohol left behind, and enjoy Riley’s sidearm (which highlights Ellie’s fascination with adventure and death), the pair head to — where else? – The mall.

It turns out that FEDRA inadvertently restored power to the mall, giving Ellie a chance to get a taste of old-school consumerism. and run down an escalator to the tune of a Norwegian pop band The classic ’80s Take On Me song. (Elle has a version of the group’s greatest hits in her midst.) This tune Makes an unforgettable appearance In the The second match. The popular music video also shows a woman holding a comic book character’s hand and being drawn into an adventure – Ellie has a similarly over-the-top experience after she metaphorically takes Riley’s hand in this episode.

Bella Ramsey is very good here, with Ellie’s awkwardness about her Victoria’s Secret lingerie and stolen glances at Riley hinting at her feelings. These looks get longer as the alcohol takes effect.

Mall wonders

Turns out the escalator was just a prelude to the real fun. The pair hop on a carousel playing a version of The Cure’s Just like heaven (Specifically, the sound that sounds a lot like Rockabye Baby’s Lullaby (song). Songwriter Robert Smith said this tune was inspired by romantic trip He took with him his girlfriend Marie-Paule, who later became his wife.

“The idea is that one night like this is worth a thousand hours of hard work,” he told Blender magazine in 2003, which is probably how the show’s characters will experience this adventure.

Ellie and Riley’s evening continues with a trip to the photo booth, where they hit some poses and get real cozy in close quarters.

Flawless victory

Their next destination turns out to be “the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen” – a neon-drenched arcade. By some miracle, many of the kiosks are still working and they’ve hopped on the iconic 1993 fighter Mortal Kombat 2 (a poster for that game also appears above Ellie’s bed, hinting at her magic). HBO’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery is also the Mortal Kombat franchise, Synergy FTW.

In their first battle, the more experienced, purple-clad cannibal Riley chooses Melina and Ellie for the thunder god Raiden – and ends up Excellent Milena dies from spitting out the bones.

Ellie’s revenge comes in a later round, when she runs Poorly finished stake pool. They experience the classic Mortal Kombat high of hyper-violence afterward and the sparks of romance get a little stronger. (Be warned though: Too many cartoon dead to watch It can have a strange effect on your mind.)

More classic puns

We remembered the next surprise for Riley Ellie’s penchant for bad jokeswhere she presents her boyfriend with a copy of No Pun Intended: Volume Too.

More fun puns await.

HBO What Did the Frustrated Cannibal Do? He raised his hands. What did the triangle say to the circle? You are so vain how drunk the computer? takes screenshots. What do you call an alligator in a sweater? They are interrupted before Riley can read the answer, but he is a “detective”.

Ellie is briefly reminded of the reality of their condition when she discovers the explosives that Riley prepared. Riley admits that the Fireflies are sending her away to the quarantine zone in Atlanta, and she wanted to spend this last night hanging out with Ellie before leaving. Ellie is not at all happy about this but eventually decides to go on with the last wonder.

Halloween time

After sharing their feelings in a super-chilled fashion store—since the outbreak in late September 2003 still sets up for a spooky season—the couple don masks and dance to an Etta James song to a ’60s tune. I got You Babe (You may know the original Sonny and Cher from the 1993 movie Groundhog Day.) The lyrics imply that young adults are defying their elders in the pursuit of love — just like these teens.

This is when the romantic tension comes to a head and Ellie decides to make a move, giving Riley a brief but passionate kiss. With their emotional and sexual cards finally on the table, Riley agrees to stay and it looks like things are going to be fine.

Until you get horrific attacks. Ellie manages to cut it open, but they both discover that they have been bitten. This will eventually lead to Ellie discovering her mysterious immunity, but Riley isn’t so lucky. They both think it’s a death sentence, but Riley wants to live as long as possible.

“We can just be poetic and dirty, and lose our minds together,” she tearfully says before they embrace.

We don’t see what happens next, but it’s possible that Ellie was forced to kill Riley once the infection took hold. It is likely that Marilyn found her then.

Back in 2023, Ellie maintains a spirit of refusing to give up hope – she is determined to heal Joel’s wounds rather than abandon him. She finds a needle and thread, and gets to work stitching up the wounds.

left behind

The section covered in this episode was not in the 2013 game at launch, it was added the following year in the Left Behind DLC pack and included with Remaster on PS4 and PS5.

You can try out a range of poses in The Last of Us Part 1’s photo booth scene.

naughty dog Screenshot from CNET

The show sticks closely to the events of the game, but the current section is more packed – it sees Ellie searching for meds in a shopping mall while an injured Joel lies unconscious. Avoiding infected robbers and humans along the way, she discovers meds in an army helicopter crashed through the roof of the mall.

During the flashback scenes with Riley, you play Fantasy game The Turning (which is basically Mortal Kombat) in the arcade… thing. The locker doesn’t work, so Riley tells Ellie to close her eyes and put her hands on the controls, then Riley describes the procedure. Mind theater indeed.

They also fight with water guns (a line in the show refers to this) and share a brief kiss in the game. A flashback ends with Ellie and Riley fleeing the mall while being chased by hordes of infected people. They both end up bitten and decide to wait out their deaths together. Riley succumbs to the fungus, but Ellie’s survival reveals her immunity.

mother’s love

You can also read a note from Ellie’s unseen mother in this chapter (one given to her by Firefly leader Marlene):

Ellie,

I’ll share a secret with you, I’m not a huge fan of kids and I hate kids. However… I stare at you dumbfounded.

You’re not a day old and holding you is the most incredible thing I’ve ever done – a life about to be cut short.

Marilyn will take care of you. There is no one in this world that I trust more than her. When the time comes she will tell you all about me. Don’t give it too much of a hard time. Try not to be stubborn like me.

I’m not going to lie, this is a very corrupt world. It won’t be easy. The thing you should always remember is that life is worth living! Find your goal and fight for it.

I see a lot of strength in you. I know you will become the woman you were meant to be.

Forever…your loving mother

I

Make me proud, Ellie!

Watch the brilliant red and green aurora borealis shine in stunning video

Part of the planet was treated to a wild festival of the Northern Lights on Sunday night. If you’re not in a place to catch the action, you can still catch up on the fun with a great time-lapse video captured in Sweden.

The European Space Agency’s Space Weather Coordination Center Eye-catching video Northern Lights in a tweet on Monday. The view is like looking at the sky through marble. Waves and waves of swirling green and red aurora lights dance across the frame.

The video comes from Swedish Institute for Space Physics camera in Kiruna, Sweden. It’s an all-sky camera, so it shows the view from horizon to horizon for the purpose of observing the Northern Lights. Takes one picture per minute.

The energetic northern lights are thanks to the sun emitting a coronal mass ejection, also known as a CME, which is a dramatic explosion of plasma. This CME hit the ground running just like that solar wind (a stream of charged particles from the sun) orbiting us. These ingredients combine for excellent conditions for the Northern Lights.

The sun has been shining a little lately, Push torches And CME as it ramps up its activity. CMEs offer the gift of twilight, but they can also disable satellites, spacecraft, and even crash into power grids.

According to the European Space Agency, the lights were visible as far south as southern England and central Germany. Kiruna is known as a hot spot for twilight events, so the camera there was treated to a dramatic show. The Northern Lights are expected to continue, so you can Check in the camera yourself For the latest photos from Sweden.

Best Headphone and Earbuds Deals

The market for headphones and earbuds is massive right now, which means that it’s critical to find a pair that’s designed to fit your needs. I like larger over-the-ear headphones when I’m working at the computer or listening to music at home, but prefer more convenient in-ear buds when I’m running or working out at the gym.

And with tons of different headphones on the market, that also means that there are always tons of deals available — but that doesn’t always equal a good value. That’s why we’re only highlighting headphone and earbud deals we think are good buys and truly worth your attention. Some older models are on sale at good prices, but that doesn’t make them good bargains: We tend to focus on newer models that are on sale and also keep our eye on deals from top earbuds and headphones brands like Sony, Apple, Bose, Jabra, Beats, Sennheiser and many more.

We’ll regularly update this post with new deals as they arrive so check back often for the best prices on top headphones and earbuds.

The new AirPods Pro (2nd generation) are powered by Apple’s new H2 chip, which delivers more processing power while being more energy efficient, according to Apple. The new chip, combined with new low-distortion drivers, allows for improved sound that offers better clarity and depth. The noise canceling is also improved — Apple says the new AirPods have “double” the noise canceling of the original AirPods Pro. Additionally, the new AirPods add an extra hour of battery life, up from 5 to 6 hours with noise canceling on. Plus, a speaker in the case that emits a sound that helps locate your buds via Find My should they decide to hide from you.

Note that while Apple has discontinued the original AirPods Pro, they’ll remain on sale at discounted prices until supplies are exhausted. However, most people should get this newer model if they can afford it.

Water-resistant: Yes (IPX4 rating — splash-proof).

Unlike the “open” LinkBuds, the LinkBuds S are traditional noise-isolating earbuds with tips you jam in your ears. They’re more compact and lighter than Sony’s flagship WF-1000M4 and also feature Sony’s V1 processor. While their sound and noise canceling don’t quite measure up to the WF-1000XM4’s, they’re close and happen to cost less. They’re the Sony buds for people who can deal with larger buds like WF-1000XM4 but want 80% to 85% of those buds’ features and performance for $80 less.

When they were released last August, Jabra touted its $80 Elite 3 earbuds as its most affordable true-wireless buds to date. Now they’re even more affordable, dipping to just $60 right now at Amazon.

The Elite 3 have a fairly basic feature set, though they offer strong sound and call quality for the money. They have 6mm drivers, four microphones for calls and Jabra’s HearThrough transparency mode. Qualcomm aptX HD audio is supported for aptX-enabled devices.

Coming in at 16% smaller than the Elite 75t, the Elite 7 Pro are Jabra’s top-of-the-line earbuds in its new range and include the company’s new MultiSensor Voice technology with a bone-conduction sensor, four microphones and intelligent algorithms to deliver new “ground-breaking call quality,” Jabra says. The voice calling performance doesn’t quite live up to the hype, but Jabra has updated the buds’ firmware, adding multipoint Bluetooth pairing and slightly improving sound quality, noise canceling and headset performance. It took a while but they’re now excellent all-around buds.

These have adjustable active noise cancellation, Jabra’s HearThrough transparency mode and Bluetooth 5.2. They offer up to 9 hours’ play time at moderate volume levels with noise canceling on, and nearly three additional charges in the charging case — total battery life is rated at 35 hours. The charging case has wireless charging capabilities.

The earbuds’ IP57 rating means they are dust-resistant and fully waterproof (they can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water). For those who like to use only a single bud, you can also use either one independently in a mono mode.

All of Samsung’s Galaxy Buds models are on sale right now, including the Galaxy Buds 2, which I tend to like the best of the current crop of Galaxy Buds. You can pick up a pair in the graphite color variant for as low as $95, with most other colors discounted by around $50. Read our Galaxy Buds 2 review.

Not quite as nice as the Z7 Pro headphones but still worth it are the Z2 over-ear headphones. These are made to withstand jerk movement while you workout and have active noise cancellation. They can run for 35 hours without dying and are great for running and the gym. These headphones are made sturdy and can withstand a drop or two. Both styles (black with silver designs and all-black) are $85 (save $35).

The Beats Solo3 wireless headphones are now down to $130 from their usual pricetag of $200. These headphones come with the Apple W1 chip, Class 1 Bluetooth, and 40 hours of listening time. A built-in microphone allows you to make phone calls wirelessly. There are four different colors available on Amazon, with all variants discounted by $70 right now.

Samsung-owned JBL has a couple of new sets of earbuds, the Live Pro 2 and Live Free 2 that are surprisingly good. Both are equipped with the same 11mm drivers, six microphones, oval tubes and oval silicon tips. And they also combine a comfortable fit along with strong noise canceling, very good sound quality and voice-calling performance, plus a robust feature set, including multipoint Bluetooth pairing, an IPX5 splash-proof rating and wireless charging.

Aside from the design — The Live Pro 2 has stems while the Live Free 2 is pill-shaped — the biggest difference between the two buds is battery life. The stemless Live Free 2 are rated for up to 7 hours, while the Live Pro 2 are rated for 10 hours.

The Live Free 2 fit securely in my ears and are smaller and superior to Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Pro, particularly in terms of comfort level. The buds are available in three color options.

The LinkBuds are, in a sense, Sony’s answer to Apple’s standard AirPods. While they don’t sound as good as Sony’s flagship WF-1000XM4 noise-isolating earbuds, they offer a discreet, innovative design and a more secure fit than the AirPods, as well as good sound and very good voice-calling performance.

Like the third-gen AirPods, their open design allows you to hear the outside world — that’s what the ring is all about. That makes them a good choice for folks who want to hear what’s going around them for safety reasons or just don’t like having ear tips jammed in their ears. They also have a few distinguishing extra features, including Speak to Chat and Wide Area Tap. Instead of tapping on a bud, you can tap on your face, just in front of your ear, to control playback.

They’re IPX4 splash-proof and thanks to their fins — Sony calls them Arc Supporters — they lock in your ears securely and work well for running and other sporting activities.

These over-ear Soundcore headphones earned a spot on our list of the best wireless headphones for 2023 thanks to their premium noise-cancelling capabilities and budget-friendly price. They’re a more affordable alternative to high-end pairs like the Sony WH-1000XM5 or Bose QC45, and offer many of the same features for less. In addition to adaptive noise-cancellation, they also boast an impressive 50-hour battery life, support for LDAC Hi-Res audio and multipoint Bluetooth pairing.

If you want the simple, traditional headphones that can plug into your iPhone, then you can save on these headphones that typically retail for $18. I have a pair of these as a backup and as a good option when I don’t want noise cancellation. Something about these headphones just looks good to me, and they fit snugly. Though they aren’t the loudest, making phone calls are easy and clear.

Jabra

Released in mid-2020, the Jabra Elite 45h were essentially billed as the best on-ear headphones for the money and among the best headphones for work. While there’s nothing terribly fancy about them, they are a great value for on-ear headphones, with good sound quality, a sturdy design and comfortable fit — for on-ear headphones, anyway.

They perform well as a headset for making calls too, and include a sidetone feature that allows you to hear your voice so you don’t talk too loudly. Battery life is also good and it has multipoint Bluetooth pairing so you can connect to both your computer and your smartphone at the same time, and easily switch between the two should a call come in on your phone.

We’ve seen these headphones on sale for as much as $50 off, so it may be worth it to wait and see if the price drops even further.

The Treblab Z7 Pro headphones offer comfort and noise cancellation along with premium sound quality. With 45 hours of playtime and fast USB-C charging, you can use these headphones all day and night without worry. The Beats Studio Buds look a lot like the rumored stemless AirPods that people were talking about but never materialized — as AirPods anyway. Geared toward both iOS and Android users, they’re missing a few key features on the Apple side of things (there’s no H1 or W1 chip), but they’re small, lightweight earbuds that are comfortable to wear and offer good sound. They fit most ears securely, including mine — I run with them without a problem — but others may find a better fit with the Beats Fit Pro and their integrated wing tips.

Their lowest price to date is $90.

While the C500’s design sensibility has more in common with the high-end WF-1000XM4 than their predecessor, the WF-XB700 Extra Bass, the C500 don’t have noise canceling and are pretty basic as far as earbuds go, with no ear-detection sensors or transparency mode. But the buds are compact, lightweight, fit comfortably and sound good for an entry-level model. They list for around $100. Read our Sony C500 first take.

The QuietComfort 45 have virtually the same design as their predecessors, the QuietComfort QC35 II, which many people considered among the most comfortable over-ear headphones — if not the most comfortable. They have the same drivers, according to Bose, and the buttons are in the same place. However, there are small but notable changes, including USB-C charging instead of micro-USB and an improved microphone configuration that boosts their voice-calling noise-canceling performance (they’re both excellent). The QC45 also include multipoint Bluetooth pairing, so you can connect them with a PC and your phone simultaneously. Read our QuietComfort 45 review.

No earbuds are perfect, of course, and not everybody will love the fit of the Sony WF-1000XM4 buds. But if you’re looking for great-sounding earbuds with active noise cancellation, solid voice-calling capabilities and good battery life, these buds check all the boxes.

The WH-XB910N are Sony’s midlevel noise-canceling headphones and since they’re an Extra Bass model, they do have a preponderance of bass. While the noise canceling isn’t up to the level of the WH-1000XM4 or new WH-1000XM5, it is improved over the previous model and it does have some of the extra features found on those higher-end models, including speak to chat, wearing detection sensors and Sony’s Precise Voice Pickup technology. There’s also multipoint Bluetooth pairing, so you can pair it with your phone and computer simultaneously, and it supports Sony’s LDAC audio codec.

When you have a product that a lot of people love, change can be risky. Such is the case for Sony’s WH-1000XM5, the fifth generation of the 1000X series headphones, which were first released in 2016 as the MDR-1000X Wireless and have become increasingly popular as they’ve improved with each generation. Over the years, Sony has made some tweaks to the design, but nothing as dramatic as what it’s done with the WH-1000XM5. Other than the higher $400 price tag ($50 more than the WH-1000XM4), most of those changes are good, and Sony’s made some dramatic improvements with voice-calling performance as well as even better noise canceling and more refined sound.

Sony has released its new WH-1000XM5 but the WH-1000XM4 remains on sale. While I prefer the WH-1000XM5 — it’s a little more comfortable, has improved noise canceling, more refined sound and significantly better voice-calling performance — the WH-1000XM4 is still a great headphone and some people may prefer its slightly more energetic sound and how it folds up into a smaller case than that of the WH-1000M5. It also costs less and we should see some nice discounts on it going forward.

While the Beats Fit Pro ($200) technically aren’t AirPods, they’re built on the same tech platform as the AirPods Pro (yes, Apple owns Beats). Unlike Beats’ earlier and less expensive Studio Buds, the Beats Fit Pro include Apple’s H1 chip and have most of the AirPods Pro’s features, including active noise canceling, spatial audio and Adaptive EQ. They’re also splash-proof with an IPX4 water-resistance rating. I’d venture to call them the sports AirPods you’ve always wanted. And for some people, they might just be better than the AirPods Pro.

Over the years, JBL has put out some decent true-wireless earbuds, but nothing that really got me too excited. That’s finally changed with the arrival of the Samsung-owned brand’s new Live Pro 2 and Live Free 2 buds. Both sets of buds — the Live Pro 2 have stems while the Live Free 2 have a pill-shaped design — offer a comfortable fit along with strong noise canceling, very good sound quality and voice-calling performance, plus a robust set of features, including multipoint Bluetooth pairing, an IPX5 splash-proof rating and wireless charging.

This is essentially an upgraded version of the Elite 75t Active and includes Jabra’s new ShakeGrip coating technology that’s “designed to give the ultimate fit while moving around and to stay put when you sweat.”

This model has adjustable active noise canceling, Jabra’s HearThrough transparency mode and four built-in microphones for “clear call quality,” with two additional microphones for “personalization.”

While this model is missing the step-up Elite 7 Pro’s MultiSensor Voice technology, Jabra says it delivers the same “premium experience” as the Elite 7 Pro with many of the same specs, including IP57 water- and dust-resistance, and 9 hours of battery life with noise canceling on.

Don’t expect the Elite 7 Active to deliver quite the same voice-calling performance as the Elite 7 Pro, but it should offer the same sound and fit, albeit just a little grippier in your ear. You can also use either bud independently in a mono mode.

The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 have been out a while but are still one of the best over-ear noise canceling headphones, with excellent sound, noise cancellation and top-notch headset performance for voice calls. Bose’s newer QuietComfort 45 headphones probably have the slight edge in terms of comfort and offer a tad better noise canceling, but the Headphones 700 arguably sound a little better with slightly more refined sound. $269 is their lowest price to date.
