5 True Wireless Earbuds Under $40 Worth Buying

We have a list Best cheap true wireless earbuds. But what if you want to pay as little as possible? Say, under $40 or less? Yes, there are a growing number of cheap true wireless earphones out there, but only a few stand out for being surprisingly more affordable and decent for the price. Like I would say, you shouldn’t expect the world at this low a price, but you can toss any of these wireless earbuds in your gym bag (when the gyms open up again) and not be sad if you lose them.

Here are my current cheap true wireless favorites, listed from highest to lowest priced (but heck, they’re all pretty cheap). I tested them all, and will update this list periodically.

What makes the Soundpeats Air3 Deluxe HS headphones special is that they sound surprisingly good for an open earbud—very close to what you get from Apple’s AirPods 3 for audio. Moreover, they support Sony’s LDAC audio codec for devices that provide it. There aren’t many cheap open ear headphones that sound good but this one has good bass response and clarity. It’s also good for making calls and has a low-latency game mode. Price is currently just over $35 after applying code NI6VXZF8 at checkout.

Yes (IPX7 – submersible for 30 minutes up to 1 meter)

The Tranya T20s reminds me a bit of a cheaper version of the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 without the noise cancellation. It’s no-frills and loses more premium features like an ear detection sensor that automatically pauses the music when you take a bud out of your ears. But it looks surprisingly decent for its modest price tag. If you get a tight seal, they sit flush with your ears (they don’t protrude too much) and they have decent battery life—up to 8 hours at moderate volume levels. It also works well for making calls and is IPX7 water resistant.

The case feels a little cheap and the buds are lightweight. Galaxy Buds 2 definitely feel more premium. However, the buds are well-tuned and have a relatively wide sound range. Do not expect the world from them and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

There is no IP rating, it is advertised as sweat resistant

I never tried the original Fiil CC earbuds, but the next-generation CC2 improves on the performance of the originals, with better battery life (rated at 5 hours on a single charge) and no audio latency issues when watching videos.

These stayed in my ears better than the standard AirPods. They pair quickly—they come with Bluetooth 5.2—there’s a companion app from Fiil for tweaking settings and they sound just right for open-style buds, with just enough bass to keep you from feeling shy. It is also suitable for making calls and has touch controls.

One of their defining features is the open case, which makes it easy to access the buds and put them back in their case. Thanks to some built-in magnets, they stay securely in the case — you can turn them upside down and the buds won’t pop out. Unlike the AirPods, these have square rather than round stems. This feels a little strange at first, and as a result, they fit your ears a little differently than the AirPods do.

You’re receiving Soundcore price alerts for the Anker Life P2 Mini

The Soundcore by Anker Life P2 Mini has been out for a while but remains a good earphone option. Available in several color options (navy is shown here), it’s compact, lightweight, and delivers a decent sound with 3 EQ modes to choose from. While these don’t have active noise cancellation, the battery life is good, running up to 8 hours at moderate volume levels. The P2 Mini is IPX5 splash resistant and works well but not exceptionally well as a headset for taking calls.

I also like to deny Soundcore Life P3i The buds, which retail for about $45, have active noise cancellation. They are superior to these buds, but they cost about $10 to $15 more.

You receive price alerts for the Earfun Free 2S

I was a fan of the original Earfun Free, and now there is an upgraded version called Earfun Free 2 (later upgraded to 2S). It’s not a huge upgrade, but like the originals, it fits my ear well and delivers decent bang with solid bass. It just has a touch of treble and bass boost (there’s plenty of bass), and extra features like wireless charging.

Battery life is rated at up to 7 hours at moderate volume levels, and these headphones are completely waterproof with an IPX7 rating. These have Bluetooth 5.2 and use Qualcomm’s QCC3040 chip which includes support for the aptX audio codec if you’re using a compatible device (some Android smartphones support this protocol).
