Procreate iPad drawing app – a CNET Editors’ Choice 2022 It costs $13 to download, but the range of artistic tools and creative features make it worth the money. The digital illustration app is accessible whether you are a design professional, an experienced digital artist, or a beginner in the world of digital illustration. I’ve been using Procreate for a couple of years now and there are still features I’m finding to improve my artwork (see all The best reproductive advice I’ve found so far).
Procreate lets you customize the gesture controls so that the app is finally customized to you. No matter what level of artist you are, Procreate features like Quickshape, blend mode, layers, alpha locks, and clipping masks can add a new level of professionalism to your art.
There is a lot going on in this app so I wouldn’t download it if you’re just looking for a place to doodle. For quick reference in the application, check out The official reproductive guide.
Autodesk sketchbook
Autodesk Sketchbook is free, but it’s surprisingly packed with technical tools that aren’t blocked by paywalls. You can use the free version for seven days after which you will be asked to create an Autodesk ID, which is also free. It’s a little less intimidating than Procreate when you’re just beginning your digital art journey. When you download the drawing app, it will give you a quick tutorial on where all the essential tools are.
Autodesk has an extensive and well-organized brush library, and with customizable brushes it’s easy to adjust settings such as brush size, opacity, and pressure. Even with the typical learning curve for a new drawing app, the toolbar is very easy to spot. I also liked that even when zoomed in heavily, the app didn’t lose its “painting” feel by letting you see the pixels in a brushstroke.
One of my favorite parts of Sketchbook is the focus on making the transition from paper to screen easy. You might have done a nice drawing in a notebook, and with Autodesk, you don’t have to redraw the sketch in the app. Your camera acts as a scanner so you can import your art. The image is imported with a transparent background so you can work right away in the app.
art group 4
Art Set 4 is one of the basic and realistic drawing applications. It’s free to download, but most of its tools are unlocked with Premium Pro features, which cost $10. This app will be best if you are completely new to digital drawing – it feels similar to having physical tools and paper in front of you. I like its user interface. If you’re intimidated by the idea of getting into a more complex application like Procreate or Autodesk, the Art Set 4 drawing tool is a good tool to start with. It’s also fun if you just want to draw.
The thing I really love about Art Set 4 is the ease with which the free tools work together in one piece. It’s also nice that you can alternate between multicolored paper styles like canvas and rough surface for heavyweight and cold press papers for watercolor. You can choose burlap, cardboard, and grid patterns without messing up the drawing you’ve already done.
When you explore the app, any items that require Premium Pro will be locked. If you click on a locked item, Art Set will ask you if you want to upgrade and unlock everything. Premium gives you full access to over 150 brushes, 3D paint, fluid watercolors, the ability to layer and use masks, enable a “wet canvas”, drawing guides like symmetry, shapes, fills, and dozens of other ways to customize your workspace.

Not everything you create in an art app has to be a huge endeavor that ends in a masterpiece. Having fun is the most important part. Simply coloring can make for a creative and relaxing afternoon. The lake is free ASMR An art app full of coloring book sheets – in all different styles – from artists from all over the world.
The audio component of the app is particularly cool. For example, if you are doing digital painting with a paintbrush, you will hear quiet brush sounds. If you choose a paint sprayer, you’ll hear a ball bearing rattle as if you were shaking a paint can. You can turn off ASMR in settings.
Another thing I liked is the option to stay in the lines and add more colors for shading and effects. It gives you more room to be creative than just tap and fill (although you can do that if you want). Also, for each coloring page, the artist puts together an optional palette for you to use if you’re not sure about the colors.
You can stay on the app’s dashboard and choose from daily free images or explore All Art in the toolbar. Lake sorts the coloring pages into Artist, Kids, Abstract, Animals, Cities, Feminist, Portrait, Mandala collections for relaxing and satisfying symmetrical pictures.
On Lake’s free tier, you get nine free coloring pages per day. If you subscribe to a premium—$10 per month, or $40 per year—you’ll get access to all of the coloring pages, more color wheel variations and the option to use a blank canvas.
