Motorola’s foldable phone concept hints at a wild future

Motorola made a big impression in 2020 with its Razer folding clamshellAnd the flexible screen has been taken to new heights at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Motorola’s foldable phone concept includes a screen that wraps around the bottom of the phone. This roll screen can then automatically extend outward to create a larger screen, or roll away and provide a handy second screen.

I got my hands on the phone and although it’s just a proof of concept, it actually works. Double-pressing a button on the side unlocks the phone, with the screen extending beyond the top edge to create a larger 16:9 screen. Double-press again and it will gently slide back in.

Some apps will trigger the shift automatically: If you’re watching a YouTube video and turn the phone into landscape mode, as the YouTube app automatically flips the orientation, the screen will also extend outward, providing more surface area to immerse you more in your favorite content.

In my demo, I also saw how the phone would stay in its smaller position when scrolling through emails, but tapping Compose stretches the screen, making more space for the keyboard.

When the screen is in its compact position, it wraps around the back of the phone and can act as a second screen. You can use it to check the weather, incoming notifications, or other information. Shoot the camera and this back screen will become your selfie viewfinder.

It’s a great concept and it was really exciting to see the phone transform in my hands. I do have concerns about the screen’s durability when stretched, though. It’s so thin when it snaps onto the top of the phone, it looks like it could easily take damage. But these are exactly the kind of kinks that will be worked out during the concept stage.

Motorola doesn’t say if this phone will ever go on sale, or how much we can expect to pay if it ever comes out. And while it does have several cameras, the company doesn’t spell out the specifications of those cameras — or, in fact, any major specifications of the phone itself.
