When did the March craze begin?

With 68 teams invited to the Big Dance, the NCAA holds four games to bring the field down to 64. Next, the math is working on four regional tournaments of 16 teams each. The winners of the four regional tournaments then advance to the Final Four, which was held this year in Houston.

March Madness began on Tuesday, March 14, with two games followed the next night by two more games. After those first four matches, the field of 64 was decided and the tournament began in earnest with a full slate of matches on Thursday and Friday, March 16th and 17th. All 64 teams played and half were eliminated. This weekend features the winners of those games. Whoever wins moves to Sweet 16 next week.
