When the temperatures rise, sipping on iced coffee is a great way to cool off while sipping the caffeine. It’s easy to make a chilled atmosphere at home, but you need to decide which method you’re going to use.
Two options have garnered a large following: cold brew, which is steeped in cold water overnight, and Japanese-style iced coffee, made by simply pouring hot coffee over ice cubes.
cold brew
Despite its name, this drink can be prepared at room temperature or in the refrigerator. It is usually made in a concentrated form. This means that its flavor will not be diluted with additional ingredients such as ice, milk and ice water.
The process requires an approximate ratio of ground coffee to water of 1:4. Commonly used brewing containers include mason jars, a French press, or a dedicated press Cold brew coffee maker. Brewing is complete after the coffee grounds have been steeped for 12 to 24 hours. The last step is to filter the drink from the hard ground.
The result is an ultra-strong liquid that is sweet, silky smooth, and free of bitterness or acidity. If the idea makes you thirsty, check out our complete guide on How to make your own cold brew.

This iced coffee pattern looks simple but very ingenious: You brew coffee In a coffee pot or pitcher full of ice.
You can add less to increase the ratio of coffee to water to about 1:11. This is stronger than the typical 1:16 ratio for drip coffee.
In addition to not needing the hours of steeping that cold brewing requires, you’ll need to increase the ratio by a third—or roughly 1:11.
It helps to increase the efficiency to the highest degree. Compared to standard drip coffee, which is typically a

I like to use 70g (1/3 cup) of ground coffee to 851g (3 1/2 cups) of water, about a 1:12 ratio.
The beauty here is that the ice in a one-liter glass carafe makes up for the stronger drip. In the end, you’re left with a well-balanced and delicious cold drink.

Speed
Cold coffee takes much longer to brew. The 12 to 24 hour preparation time requires a kind of advance planning that isn’t right for everyone.
In contrast, Japanese-style iced coffee brews in the same time as regular drip coffee (5 to 8 minutes). This alone makes it the best choice for morning coffee drinkers.

flavor
It comes down to personal preference. Cold brew is sought after by many because of its unique sweetness and low acidity. The brewing method tends to evoke deep chocolate notes as well, especially from the darkly roasted beans.
If you’re a fan of light, medium-bodied coffee, cold brew probably isn’t ideal. Coffee roasted in this way often requires acid brightness to bring out its full flavour. And this can only happen during hot fermentation.

difficulty
Cold preparation seems very easy to prepare. You just add ground coffee to cold water and wait. No need for heat or a special brewing machine. However, separating the brewed liquid from the solid coffee can be a pain. Unless you invest in a stand-alone cold brew maker, the stress and clean-up can often be a mess.

However, pouring hot iced coffee is almost as convenient as regular drip brewing. Simply pour hot water over your beans in a filter and you’re in business. You can even use an automatic coffee maker for this task. You’ll need plenty of ice on hand, but if you already own a competent ice maker, this isn’t a problem.

verdict
I am definitely a big fan of cold brew coffee. I love it for its strength, sweetness, and caffeine flavour. However, relying on a cold brew on my daily summer morning commute isn’t practical.
It’s hard to beat the instant gratification of Japanese-style iced coffee. I can make a cold pitcher in minutes. And savor the full flavor of hot coffee in an iced drink, that’s just the icing on the cake. I just hope my ice maker can keep up.
