Google Fi is getting a little updated. On Wednesday, the search giant’s wireless service (which It works on the T-Mobile network) introduced some tweaks and updates, including a rebrand of Google Fi Wireless, the ability to connect smartwatches, and a free trial program.
The changes, which took effect today, were Detailed on the google blog. Here are the two to know (other than including “wireless” in the carrier’s name):
Free Smartwatch Connection Google Fi finally supports connected watches, at least Google’s pixel clock and Samsung watches. With today’s change, people who have a cellular copy of one of those watches can add it to any Google Fi Wireless plan at no additional charge. Other carriers generally charge around $10 per month to add a cellular plan to a smartwatch, which makes this a welcome change for people who want extra connectivity. However, there is no mention of Apple Watch support, so it looks like Apple users are out of luck at the moment (though at least Google Fi users can finally get 5G on their iPhones). New Free Demo – Similar to recent moves made by a number of players, incl T-MobileAnd Verizon And cricket (owned by AT&T), there’s now a free trial that lets you try out Google Fi Wireless as long as you have a compatible, unlocked phone that can use eSIM. Unlike the big three carriers’ offerings, Google’s trial is shorter, with a seven-day limit and requires you to enter your credit card information. If you don’t cancel after the seven days have elapsed, you’ll be automatically charged for the provider’s Simply Unlimited plan which starts at $50 per month for one line.
Speaking of Simply Unlimited, Google is making a small tweak to that plan as well by making it $80 per month to get two, three, or four lines. This is an increase of $5 per month over its previous price for three lines, though the company says it will refund users $5 for the next three billing cycles.
Google is also revamping its Fi Wireless app to allow for more “family-focused design” including the ability to easier manage who can contact children on a family plan or add additional users. The company says that this update will begin rolling out today and will continue “over the coming weeks.”
