Global smartphone shipments fell 13% in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year, according to a a report Published Thursday by the research firm Canalys.
This decline comes amid the convergence of economic conditions, including the decline in high consumer demand economic inflationand slowing economic growth.
“The decline in the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2023 was within expectations across the industry,” said Canalys analyst Sanyam Chaurasia. The quarter saw 269.8 million units shipped.
Despite the slowdown in the smartphone market, Apple bucked the trend as the top five vendors increasing their market share annually, to 21% from 18%. Samsung’s competitor market share decreased from 24% to 22%, which indicates that Apple has closed its doors to its South Korean competitor, supported by strong demand for the iPhone 14 Pro series, which was announced last September.

During the fourth quarter from January to March, Samsung reclaimed the top spot from Apple, with 60.3 million units shipped driven by a new batch of products following the launch of the popular Galaxy 23 series in February. iPhone market share fell from 25% to 21%, while Samsung’s share of the pie grew from 20% to 22%. Chinese tech giant Xiaomi maintained the third position with 30.5 million shipments, and Chinese phone companies Oppo and Vivo ranked fourth and fifth on the list.
However, Apple’s quarterly decline doesn’t come as a surprise. The fourth quarter includes the launch of new iPhones, which leads to a massive increase in sales which then tapers off in the next quarter from January to March.
