Almost all The best 3D printers It can be somehow upgraded with new parts and accessories. One of the most important potential upgrades is the device’s hot end assembly, which controls the temperature at which the printer prints, and houses the nozzle that helps limit filament flow.
the Rapidchange Revo Six It is an alternative hot end for 3D printer. It’s from E3D, a company that has been making parts for 3D printers for years and is one of the gold standards, especially for nozzles and hot tips. This new model has really changed how I use 3D printers and how I think about the models I make.
With the Revo Six, you can easily swap out the nozzle portion of the printer’s hot end, allowing for plenty of variance in materials and line thickness for your project. Normally you would need to remove the filament from the nozzle, heat the nozzle to loosen the threads, unscrew it with a wrench while it’s hot, then let it cool. Then you can install a new nozzle, but you need to install it cold, then re-tighten it once it’s hot.
the $93 from Revo Six (£77) takes a lot of steps by making the nozzle and other parts of the print assembly one-piece and completely removable by hand. Take out the wick, immediately unscrew the nozzle, and switch it out. This saves a lot of time when replacing worn out nozzles, but the real magic is swapping out different sized nozzles for different models.
Why would you want different nozzle sizes
James Bricknell/CNET
The purpose of your 3D model often determines the settings you will use to print it. When printing something delicate with a lot of detail, you need a smaller nozzle diameter. With something structural that requires strength, you need a larger diameter. Most 3D printers come with a 0.4mm nozzle as standard, which is fine as a happy medium but won’t always suffice either way.
The genius of the Revo Six is the ability to virtually change nozzle sizes on the fly. Each nozzle size is color coded and available from 0.15mm all the way up to 0.8mm and can be replaced in less than a minute. The $89 kit comes with a 0.4mm nozzle, but the fully loaded $139 kit has four nozzles ranging from 0.25 to 0.8mm.
I printed out a set of brackets for a machine that I needed to mount to the wall. The swatch is completely hidden and the layer lines don’t matter, so I used a 0.8mm nozzle to print extra thick, sturdy parts as quickly as possible (larger layer lines mean faster printing too). Once I was done with the arches, I immediately switched the nozzles on the Revo Six down to 0.25mm and began printing Flower Dragon with fine detail from Fotis Mint. Having this flexibility in one machine is great. It saves money on different printers, and most importantly, it saves me time, something I have very little in my daily chores.
Upgrade the upgrade with E3D Obxidian
James Bricknell/CNET
Like all good 3D printing accessories, the Rapidchange Revo V6 is upgradeable. Not only did E3D produce low-cost replacement nozzles for all the different sizes you could want, they made a special nozzle for odd threads as well.
Obsidian (Obsidian, like rock) is an E3D crater specifically designed to help combat wear and tear caused by using abrasives filled with other media, such as wood or carbon fiber. It’s made of brass, not a brass alloy, and has a special coating that helps the fibers move through the spout without sticking. It is also designed to work with the Revo quick change system.
Buzz phrases like “the last nozzle you’ll ever need” sound hyperbolic, but at the same time, so does its longevity $59. Obxidian Compared to standard nozzles—they can last indefinitely as long as you don’t use a glow-in-the-dark fuse at high speed—it makes me wonder if it’s worth buying a standard Revo nozzle again. In fact, the Obxidian only comes in 0.4mm and 0.6mm in diameter, so the other nozzle sizes are worth having for other printing tasks. Filaments that have other materials in them – wood or carbon-laden PLA – benefit from the higher flow rate, so larger nozzle sizes work better with Obxidan. For standard prints, though, Obxidian has it all covered.
An accessory that completely elevates your device
All the The best 3D printing accessories Improve your experience in some way, but the Revo Six coupled with an Obxidian nozzle will fundamentally change the way you print. Since many manufacturers use the E3D V6 hot tip in some way, the company has been able to create Revo Six systems that are easy to replace on a wide range of 3D printers. From Creality to Prusa, E3D has Revo to help you convert.
I’m convinced the Rapidchange Revo Six is the next big change to hot ends going forward, and while I haven’t been able to convert all of my 3D printers, if you only have one or two, investing in a fully loaded kit is well worth it.
