Contrary to fashion, high-quality toys do not lose their favorite with children the moment the seasons change. A number of the hottest games from last year have passed the fad stage and remain hugely popular even this year. From Squishmallows to Bluey Playhouse, you’ll find something here for every child, no matter the occasion or age. Here are the hottest games from 2022 that are still killing it in 2023.
For more ideas, review Amazon’s list of the best games and the The best STEM toys.
Not ready for a real pet? Little Live Pets is here for you. The Mama Surprise Guinea Pig Set includes a soft, interactive Mama Pig and three babies that will pop into the cage. Note: An adult is needed to set up the hutch so the kids can experience the “birth” surprise element. Mama has over 20 sounds and reactions, and the set includes accessories for your new pets.
What’s better than a single Squishmallow? Three of them. These plump tops are still very popular with kids. (The adults agree, because Squishmallows has already won the Toy Society 2022 Game of the Year Award.) This gift combines great toys with an element of surprise, so unwrapping this mystery box will be special. Inside the box are three randomly selected 8-inch plush toys.
If your child loves imagining themselves in the Star Wars universe, boost the magic with the L0-LA59 (LOLA) Interactive Robot. LOLA features over 45 combinations of light, sound, and movement, and three different modes of play. Attach the LOLA to the included stand in hover mode, or put it in companion mode by attaching the legs. On the Go Mode means it zooms across the galaxy (with some help from you).
The animated Australian family of dogs has our hearts. And with a range of fun and quality toys, they have our wallets, too. Give your child hours of playtime with this new interactive playset. The large house (17 inches long by 30 inches wide) folds up for easy storage, and you can put Bingo, Bluey, Chatterbox, and Nana in there along with all the accessories. When kids squeeze the octopus, lights and sounds are activated for level-up play.
Kids who enjoy building will love this DIY kit. They can put together a two-foot-tall vending machine that doubles as a coin bank. A soda bottle-shaped gummy candy is included so kids can stock up on theirs and start selling. Bonus: This set isn’t all fun and games; It’s a disguised STEM project. Lessons on math, money, gears, gravity, force, and more are all included in this great gift. Best for kids ages 8 and up.
New set from Lego, Olivia’s Space Academy contains 757 pieces. Build the shuttle model, classroom, mission control and observatory. Four Lego figures and science accessories – including a planet model – complete the science scene. Best for ages 8 and up.
With Magic Mixies, kids can cast a spell on their very own magic crystal ball using the included light-up wand and conjure up an adorable Magic Mixie. When the creativity is over, the interactive stuffed toy offers a fun all its own with over 80 lights, sounds and reactions. Bonus: The crystal ball doubles as a night light.
This cute hair salon set will impress any child who loves cute little animals. If you already have some Calico Critters play sets, Pony’s Stylish Hair Salon is the perfect addition to your “town”. The salon includes a posable pony figure with silky hair and dress, and over 40 accessories. Best for ages 3 and up.
Snap Circuits is the perfect gift for curious kids. There are over 100 electronic projects possible with this STEM kit, which is best for ages 8 and up. Build a flashlight, photo sensor, siren and more. The best part is that kids learn about the basics of electricity while they play.
This is the mother of all dinosaur games. Measuring over 3 feet long, the Super Colossal Giganotosaurus was an impressive game. He can gobble up action figures (thankfully you can save them through his belly) and generally wreak havoc. Best for ages 4 and up.
Pop-It plastic bubbles are so much fun to smooth. It’s easy to see why fidget toys are so popular. But this trend has a new twist: It’s now a glow-in-the-dark. Simply press the patterns that light up to play with them. The Light Up Pop It Pro makes a great toy for car rides or flights, or just something useful to keep the kids busy.
This sturdy plastic microscope is great for little hands to grasp. Children aged 5 years and over can view over 220 BBC videos and photos on screen, or view the eight double-sided smart slides. Magic Adventures Microscope contains games and other fun content, but it’s also a real microscope, with up to 200x magnification.
Embrace your dark side with this exciting board game from Ravensburger. Kids ages 10 and up will enjoy strategizing as Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, General Grievous, Assajj Ventress or Move Gideon. The award-winning Villainous game system is also great for family game night.
Young fashionistas will covet this LOL collection. Your child will enjoy opening a small package to reveal the 12 exclusive dolls in this set. Fold the big box into four fun scenes, including a fashion show, and have these dolls walk the runway. Stickers, accessories, fashions, and more surprises are included for the complete doll fashion show experience.
Discover the colors and crystals that lie beneath the surface of these 10 geodes with National Geographic’s STEM geode kit. It includes everything your budding geologist needs to learn about how geodes form, and then they can crack some open for themselves. Along with 10 samples, the child includes a guide, magnifying glass, goggles, and display stands.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 introduced a very popular character: Baby Groot. Movie fans will love this 476-piece LEGO set that produces a poseable model of Groot. Best for kids 10 and up, the set includes pieces for Groot that measure over 10 inches high, plus a pretend cassette tape.
This playing guitar is a fun gift. Preschoolers (and even older kids) will enjoy jamming with four different play modes: play with band, free play, solo jam, and play any song (using bluetooth). Play your child’s favorite tunes by syncing to any Bluetooth enabled device. Baby Shark, anyone? We love the realistic design of the guitar and the reusable packaging. Bonus: Parents control the volume.
It’s pricey, but it’s worth putting it on your game list. Nintendo Switch game consoles are very popular. So if your child is sans Switch, you can give them hours of entertainment with Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart, Zelda, Just Dance or whatever game they play.
The new OLED model has a larger and sharper screen than the original. And the Switch is definitely a better console for younger kids than the more expensive Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. We love that the Switch can be played on a TV or as a handheld device.
Mattel has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build 60 homes around the world in honor of 60 years of Barbie’s Dreamhouse. The 2022 version of Barbie’s plastic house has three floors, stands 43 inches high and features 10 indoor and outdoor living areas, including a moveable lawn area and a pool. It comes furnished with lights and sounds and 70 accessories.
