The new Sony CH-520 on-ear headphones are on sale for $48

I recently reviewed Sony’s entry level CH-720N noise canceling headphones. They’re pretty good, but if you can afford them—they’re listed for $150—the company’s new budget CH-520 headphones are an interesting option, selling for as low as $48or 20% off their list price of $60.

At first I had low expectations for the CH-520s. It looks and feels a bit cheap, lacks noise cancellation and is no-frills. However, it turns out that they sound good for their price, are lightweight and very comfortable earbuds, and also have excellent battery life (it’s rated for up to 50 hours at moderate volume levels). In addition, it is equipped with multi-point Bluetooth pairing, so you can pair it with two devices simultaneously (such as a smartphone and a computer) and easily switch audio between these devices. Voice calling performance is good, but not at the level of what you get with the CH-720Ns.

Note that there is no wired option – this is a wireless Bluetooth headset only. The CH-520s provide an overall balanced sound with decent clarity. The bass has some punch but doesn’t get loud, and you won’t get quite as wide a sound range as you get from Sony’s more expensive over-ear headphones. But these definitely sound better than Sony’s previous entry-level headphones, and they sound better than I thought.

I tried the white but it also comes in blue and black (unfortunately, no protective carrying case included). It’s also worth noting that they’re linked to the Sony Headphones Connect app for iOS and Android, which allows for firmware upgrades and equalizer access to tweak the sound, as well as active multipoint Bluetooth pairing.

The CH-520 headphones are comfortable for on-ear phones.
