Users will now be able to send Microsoft Word documents directly to Amazon’s first site E Ink Tablet As part of a new software update that begins rolling out on Monday. Other improvements include adjustable contrast for PDFs, a new two-column display for reading in landscape mode, and the ability to get a bird’s-eye view of your notebooks where you can add, move, or delete individual pages.
This is the first time that users have been able to take advantage of Amazon’s partnership with Microsoft Word, although it is a feature that has been touted since The writer was first announced last September. Users with a Microsoft 365 subscription can now share a document to Scribe directly from the Word app by heading to the File menu, scrolling down to Export, and clicking Send to Kindle. Users will also be able to add the Send To Kindle functionality to the Quick Access Toolbar in Word. Once you’re ready to send, you’ll have the option to send it “like a printed document,” which lets you handwrite notes directly on the page, or the option “like a Kindle book,” which lets you just handwrite via the sticky notes app.
CNET found the sticky notes app to be particularly frustrating when we do this Author review in December. Amazon doesn’t allow users to write directly on the page on most of their content, instead forcing people to handwrite on sticky notes instead. You will have to hold down the pen to highlight a word and then click on the Sticky Notes option that appears from the pop-up menu. Once you type your note, the sticky note will disappear from the page. You’ll need to go to your notes and features section to see what you’ve written, and while the hyperlink will take you back to the page where the note was written, it won’t direct you directly to a note’s location—a real problem if you have more than one note on a page.
Although the latest update to Scribe does not fix this issue, it does provide the option to override it in Microsoft Word documents using the Send as Printed Document option. Right now, users can only write directly on the page using PDFs and now Word documents being sent to the Kindle through this new method.
This is in stark contrast to the Kobo philosophy. The Kindle competitor recently released a new branding for Kobo Elipsa 2E E Ink tablet, which comes with an improved stylus and note-taking functionality. The Elipsa 2E, like the original Elipsa, allows users to write directly on the page of any Kobo e-book—including ones you can get at your local library.
