Google is building AI Boost into Gmail, Docs, Slides, and Sheets

With a feature called Duet AI for Google WorkspaceGoogle is starting to build new AI technology into some of its most used tools.

With Duet AI for Gmail and Docs, you’ll be able to let Google draft emails or word processing documents based on short text prompts, Google said Wednesday in a press release. Google I/O developer conference. chief executive officer Sundar Pichai introduced the Help Me Write feature With replying to an airline’s customer service message, first with a terse reply and then a more detailed alternative designed to sound more serious.

“Just type the claim of what you want in an email requesting a full refund, hit create, and a full draft will appear. Details of the trip were easily pulled from the previous email,” Pichai said at the conference. In this case, a more detailed email could increase the chances of a refund.

Text prompts will also create a spreadsheet in Google Sheets – for example, a chart for a pet service provider to keep track of customers and their dogs. And to spice up your presentations, Google Slides will be able to create images based on text prompts.

The features embody what is possible with modern “generative” AI, which brings a new creative element to machine learning technology that has been under intense development over the past decade. Generative AI, most notably OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has fired the imaginations of people who use it creatively or productively, to write poetry, for example, or to program. Generative AI has struck fear into school administrators, who anticipate a new era of cheating, and has caused fears that computers will eliminate white-collar jobs, such as tax advisors or paralegals.

New Google tools aren’t available yet, however Google has opened Workspace Labs Waiting list where you can register. The company has increased the number of “Trusted Testers” trying products since it first started talking about it in March.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai shows off an AI-powered Help Me Write feature coming to Gmail and Google Docs that can turn a text message like “Write a thank-you note” or “Write a job description for a textile designer” into a draft document.

“We’re absolutely blown away by the interesting, clever or creative things that people do with this feature,” Aparna Pappu, General Manager, Google Workspace Productivity Tools, said in a briefing on the features. This includes writing a job application, reference letters, essays, and formal thank-you notes after the job interview.

The Duo poster shows how tech companies are positioning AI as an assistant to enhance what they do, like autocorrect or grammar checking on steroids. In fact, Google’s competitor Microsoft calls its AI-enhanced productivity tools Microsoft 365 Co-Pilot. Like Duet AI, Copilot is undergoing limited testing.

Google plans to let people roll the dice a bit with “help me type,” Babu added, with a new version of the “I’m lucky” button that for years added a bit of automatic randomness to the company’s search engine.

“When you try it, sometimes you get a haiku, and sometimes you get an email in a pirate voice,” she said. “It’s just a little fun.”
