Google Pixel 6A phone Android was my favourite Phone under $500 last year, which means Google has a lot to live with the rumored Pixel 7A. This new phone may be announced as early as Wednesday Google I/O developer conference, although at this time Google has not officially teased the Pixel 7A. Should a new mid-range Pixel phone debut, that device will face more competition in the budget phone space from Samsung, which owns Galaxy A54 5G $450.
The $449 Pixel 6A is essentially a smaller, more affordable version of the Pixel 6A Pixel 6, Google’s flagship phone since 2021. The Pixel 6A has the same Tensor processor and general design as the Pixel 6, but with a lower resolution, a 12MP main camera and a few other compromises. But the relatively low cost, solid photography for the price, and attractive design have made it a top choice for Android fans shopping on a budget.
Google got a lot right with the Pixel 6A, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. For example, I sometimes felt that the Pixel 6A’s display was a little too dim, and its lack of wireless charging seems antiquated in 2023. And while we wait to see if the Pixel 7A makes its way to you, I’m rounding up the features I love most that you want to see on a potential phone.
Is the Pixel 7A coming?
Google’s Pixel 7A hasn’t been officially announced, but since the Pixel 6A was announced at last year’s I/O conference, it wouldn’t be surprising that the Pixel 7A made its debut at this year’s I/O on May 10. Leaks, like the photo that claims to be The Pixel 7A will be available in blue. Aside from a possible I/O announcement, if Google maintains the same product launch strategy as last year, the Pixel 7A could appear as soon as this summer.
Same screen size, but smoother and brighter
The Pixel 6A’s 6.1-inch screen size is perfect for people who prefer smaller phones, so I’m hoping the Pixel 7A will inherit that trait. It complements Google’s Pixel family well by ensuring that there is a small, medium and large option within the lineup.
However, I hope to see display upgrades in other areas. Google could improve the brightness on the Pixel 7A, for example, considering I sometimes tended to go above 50% brightness on the Pixel 6A, even indoors. This is one area where Samsung rarely has a problem, especially in Galaxy S22 and S23 lineup.
I’d also like to see a higher refresh rate on the Pixel 7A. Since Google’s A-series phones aren’t meant to have all the advantages you’d find in a flagship phone, the standard refresh rate might seem reasonable for the Pixel 7A. However, the problem is that high refresh rates are no longer just for premium devices. Budget phones like last year’s Galaxy A53 5G and even Motorola Moto G5G It has higher refresh rates than the standard 60Hz, which results in smoother scrolling. This leaves the Pixel 6A a bit behind, though it does beat these competing devices in other ways, like with its camera.

wireless charging
Another feature missing from the Pixel 6A is wireless charging. Being able to charge your phone on a wireless charging pad instead of plugging it in may not seem like a deal breaker to most people. But similar to high refresh rates, it doesn’t seem like wireless charging should be a standout feature in 2023, especially since it’s been common on most phones for the past five years. However, many competing phones in this price range don’t support wireless charging either, apart from $429 for the iPhone SE.
Fortunately, the Pixel 7A may actually get wireless charging, if it is WojciechowskiMy findings are accurate.
More guaranteed Android updates
Google’s Pixel phones are among the first to get new Android software updates. However, Google does not provide Android version updates as long as Samsung provides them. Given that Google is the provider for Android, and Pixel phones are expected to provide the perfect Android experience, I hope Google will consider expanding support in the future. And not just for the Pixel 7A, but for all upcoming Pixel phones.

The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro both support the ability to unlock your phone with your face, unlike the Pixel 6. Since this functionality relies primarily on the Pixel 7’s front-facing camera, unlike Apple’s Face ID, which creates a depth map of your face, I don’t see any reason It prevents Google from easily bringing this feature to the Pixel 7A. Samsung’s Galaxy A53 5G, which was in the same price range as the Pixel 6A at launch, supports facial recognition.
If your Pixel 7A gets the Pixel 7’s Face Unlock feature, just remember that Google warns that it’s not as secure as using a fingerprint or PIN reader. For this reason, it’s meant to more conveniently unlock your phone, rather than authenticate purchases.
The image is not blurred
One of the biggest ways Google sets Pixel phones apart from other Android devices is by providing software and camera features that you can’t get anywhere else. One of my favorite additions to the Pixel 7 is a feature called Photo Unblur, which sharpens old photos that may have been out of focus. If the Pixel 7A runs on the same Tensor G2 processor as the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, it will likely support Photo Unblur as well. And I hope it does, because during my review, I was deeply impressed by how honed my photo was from 10 years ago.
Google has a chance to make the next A-series Pixel phone even more compelling by adding features that should be standard in 2023 — namely wireless charging and a screen with a higher refresh rate. Google will naturally need to make some compromises with the Pixel 7A to keep its price competitive and maintain some separation from the Pixel 7. But even with the aforementioned features, there’s still a lot that sets the Pixel 7 apart from its cheaper sibling, such as a larger screen, higher-resolution camera, and storage option.
