Working with agricultural brand S&G Flowers/USA, a division of Syngenta Seed that has been growing plants since the early 1800s, Nintendo of America has bred the Pikmin flower (also called Punny “bacopa cabana”) from Sutera cordata Its design has five white petals and a yellow centre. Sutera cordata, also known as Chaenostoma cordatum, is native to southern Africa and, with enough sun, blooms in small, round, tightly packed flowers. Chaenostoma is a short-lived, evergreen perennial that grows as an annual in cooler climates, can be a charming addition to gardens and looks great out of hanging baskets.
Like gaming, gardening is a very popular hobby, and by combining the two, Nintendo hoped to attract the attention of hobbyists who might not have considered picking up a console over a shovel before. As America’s number one pastime, gardening continues to enjoy wide consumer appeal among people of all ages. said Keith CableS&G Flowers, then Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Through fun products like ‘Pikmin’, Nintendo is connecting with consumers beyond the living room.”
With the marketing campaign for “Pikmin” over two decades old, it is now difficult to obtain officially branded seeds for the Pikmin flower. But its very easy to grow cousins of the same sex, with flowers very similar to those inspired by the “Pikmin” characters. You can even find bacopa seeds on Amazon, Pikmin-esque Snowtopia is born. It would be great, though, if Nintendo started cultivating real life Piranha plant To promote your next “Mario” game, because that would be a really fun addition to your garden.
