In the case of Apollo, it made 7 billion API requests, which put the monthly payout to Reddit at $1.7 million and the annual fee at about $20 million, according to the app developer. If he ran every unpaid Apollo user, Selig says, the average subscriber would still make more than 300 API requests on a daily basis, which costs $2.50 per month, which is currently more than the subscription price itself.
As a reminder, Apollo currently charges $1.49 per month for its paid subscription, the annual tier costs $12.99, and the lifetime premium package costs $50. Selig also gave rough estimates about Reddit’s revenue stream and concluded that a self-advertised internet front page would significantly increase the cost to Apollo users, though Reddit did not consider his claims.
“With the proposed API pricing, it would cost the average Apollo user $2.50, which is 20 times higher than the generous estimate of what each user brings in revenue from Reddit,” says Selig in his Reddit post. He also says that Reddit is unwilling to adjust API pricing for Apollo, which means either Selig pays by any means possible or he leaves the project. From the comments on Selig’s post, it appears that some Apollo users would abandon Reddit entirely if the third-party client died, just the way many Twitter users have migrated to alternatives like Mastodon or BlueSky.
