Debuting in the 2022 296 GTB, the Ferrari F163 V6 engine boasts a slew of firsts. It’s the first V6 in a road-going Ferrari (excluding the Ferrari sub-brand’s Dino), and holds the title of the highest specific production engine in the world. It produces 654 horsepower from 2,992 cc of displacement, the highest horsepower-per-liter ratio of any production car. It’s also uniquely designed—the engine’s cylinder banks are 120 degrees apart, giving it a lower center of gravity than a conventionally shaped V6.
The turbochargers sit inside the engine head, with the most efficient design generally saving weight. This also contributes to the engine’s unique sound – with less cumbersome piping than other six-cylinder engines, the exhaust sound is closer to that of a Ferrari V12 than a conventional V6. in 296 GTB, the engine is complemented by an electric motor, giving the vehicle an all-electric range of about 16 miles. This means it can comply with urban restrictions around emissions and noise levels while still maintaining its distinctive howl when it gets out of town. Performance hybrids are an inevitable compromise as the industry moves toward electrification, but the F163 V6 proves that those compromises don’t have to mean sacrificing Ferrari’s traditional soundtrack, at least not yet.
