If you’re looking for the best TVs for gaming, you really need to look no further than our list The best TVs of 2023 overall. Other than some budget-friendly models out there, most modern TVs are well-suited for video games and offer excellent color, contrast, brightness, and resolution. However, with the advent of HDMI 2.1, some TVs now offer more advanced gaming features that can improve your experience, such as 120Hz and variable refresh rates. These gaming TVs are especially great if you can get your hands on a next-generation console such as Xbox Xbox X or Playstation 5. There are also some TVs that come with a pre-set game mode, which reduces input delay And keep your image clear.

The speed of your reaction while playing the game depends on the feedback loop between your brain, your fingers, the game controller, and the movement you see on the screen TV screen. Delaying at any time will reduce your performance and the immediacy of the exciting gameplay experience. It only takes milliseconds for the video signal from your console to travel through the HDMI input on your TV to be displayed on the screen, but milliseconds are a lot more noticeable to your brain – and can be downright fatal to your in-game character. These milliseconds of delay are known as input lag.

Top 5 best gaming TVs

The following TVs, shown at the top of the page, offer either the lowest lag I’ve measured among the TVs I’ve reviewed, the best picture quality for the money or a combination of both. Unless otherwise noted, prices shown below are for sizes 65 inches.

The C2 has the lowest lag of any TV we’ve measured, besting its predecessor the LG C1 by just a few hundredths of a second. It also has the best picture quality of any TV we’ve ever tested, and it’s our top pick for the best high-end TV for the money. With those qualifications, it’s easy to see why the C2 is considered the best TV for gaming, period.

Note that its lag is measured here using the special setting “Reduce Input Delay (Input Delay)” in the Boost position. Boost is only available for 60Hz sources, so you can’t use it with 120Hz or VRR games. With these sources, you’ll want to use Standard mode, which is still an excellent 13.5ms.

Although some cheaper TVs offer less lag than the QN90B, the difference boils down to tenths of a millisecond, as you can see from the graph above. However, the picture quality of this high-end TV stands out from those of its competitors, thanks to its mini-LED technology. Like LG, Samsung has a sneaky gaming menu with indicators for refresh rate, HDR, and more, as well as picture modes for games. It also offers a built-in bonus feature that LG doesn’t: Xbox cloud gaming.

Our overall favorite for the money TV also happens to be an excellent gaming TV. TCL supports all the high-end gaming add-ons you’d expect, including 4K input, 120Hz, and variable refresh rate. Our gaming image tests revealed excellent overall quality, particularly shadow detail.

In our Hisense review, we rated its overall picture quality nearly as good as TCL’s, and we actually liked its gaming picture a little better thanks to the more powerful highlights. It’s second only to TCL with worse lag, but most people won’t even notice the extra 5ms. Players can’t go wrong with either.

The Vizio V-Series costs hundreds less than any of the TVs mentioned above, and it can’t compete with its picture quality and lacks a 4K, 120Hz input, but for a budget model, its gaming chipset is top notch. It’s the only budget TV we’ve seen that supports variable refresh rate and its overall picture quality was superior to similarly priced models from TCL, Hisense, and others.

Price listed below is for 50 inch size.

What else do you need to know about input lag

How to turn on game mode. In most cases, display in game mode is not automatic so you will have to turn it on manually, and sometimes it can be difficult to find the setting for gaming screen. Many use a picture mode called “Game” while some, like Samsung and Vizio, let you apply Game Mode to any setting.

Sarah Teo/CNET

Game mode makes a difference, except when it doesn’t. As you can see in the table above, many TVs lag significantly when turning on Game Mode, but many don’t. In general, expensive TVs with elaborate video processing benefit more when using Game mode.

Most TVs’ game modes are good enough for most gamers. No matter how much you worry, it will be It’s hard to tell the difference Between 13 and 30 ms of input lag. Many gamers won’t even be able to tell the difference between turning Game Mode on and off – it all depends on the game and your sensitivity to lag.

Turning on Game Mode may degrade the image quality (a bit). TV makers’ listings often report poor picture quality. Low image quality is usually the result of video processing being turned off. However, in my experience, the differences in image quality are really subtle with console games, and worth the trade-off if you want to reduce lag for a great gaming experience.

The lag of 4K HDR gaming is different than that of 1080p. The resolution at which you play has an impact, and since the new consoles are featured more prominently 4K HDR Output for games, I started testing 4K HDR lag in 2018. In general, the numbers are similar to lag with a standard 1080p resolution, but as you can see from the graph above, there are exceptions.

Testing is an imprecise science. I use a Leo Bodnar lag tester. Here’s how it works and how I use it. You may see different lag test results from different review outlets, which may use Bodnar or another method.

What’s the best TV for gaming, period?

As I mentioned at the top, the best TV for gaming is the one that has the best picture quality to display everything else as well. Games benefit from deep black levels, bright highlights, and uniform screens just as movies and TV shows do.

Yes, there are other factors, but they do not apply to most players. If you’re constantly playing the same game on your LED Smart TV and never put anything else on the screen, and that game as a bright bright item stays in the same place on the screen (like a HUD or other status display), then you can be at risk. OLED combustion. But most gamers don’t have to worry about OLED burn-in.

If the TV input where your console is connected is shared with other devices and you don’t want to remember to re-enter Game Mode all the time, the Auto Game Mode feature can come in handy. Some high-end PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC gamers may appreciate it 4K/120Hz input and variable refresh rate.

However, most gamers will find that the best TV for gaming is Best TV period.
