Newly built and renovated homes will be required to support electric vehicle charging stations in their garages and parking spaces under a new Illinois state law that goes into effect next year.
Senate Bill 40Pritzker on June 9 as the Electric Vehicle Charging Act, will go into effect on January 1, 2024, after passing both chambers last month.
the law Applies to newly constructed homes as well as multi-unit apartment buildings with parking spaces built after that date.
The law states that “a new single-family dwelling or small multi-family dwelling must have at least one parking space capable of electric vehicles for each dwelling unit that has an allocated parking space.”
In addition, large multifamily apartment buildings such as a block of apartments or condominiums that are being renovated by a developer into an association must have “100% of their total parking spaces EV capable.”
The law also allows tenants to install EV charging equipment in their parking spaces at their own expense.

As announced by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Grants of $12.6 million to charge public electric vehicles stations in June. Illinois aims to be “100% clean energy by 2050,” Gov. tweeted Pritzker.
