Honda’s electrified strategy is to eschew plug-in hybrid cars in favor of focusing on mild hybrid vehicles, and 2023 CR-V Hybrid Prove why this is a good move. It delivers the benefits of electric assist—namely, improved gas mileage and more power at lower speeds—without compromising any of the key elements that have made the CR-V a bestseller. It’s still very practical, easy to live with, and spacious enough for most families. Granted, towing capacity doesn’t take a small hit with the hybrid, with a reduced capacity of 1,000 pounds, down from 1,500 pounds. But, anyone particularly concerned about towing likely won’t be shopping for a Honda crossover.
As for the all-important fuel-efficiency numbers, the EPA rates it at 40 mpg combined, broken down into 43 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. However, our test of the CR-V Hybrid found those numbers to be a little optimistic, with the versatile trail averaging 30 mpg overall. That’s still more than most of the CR-V’s competitors, but not the exceptional rating the official numbers might indicate.
