AirPods may gain the ability to check your hearing and temperature

Apple may soon add a new feature to its AirPods that will allow users to check themselves for possible hearing problems and check their body temperature, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gorman reported Sunday.

Gorman reports that the hearing test feature will play different pitches and sounds through the AirPods to determine how well a person hears. He noted that the feature would be similar to the Apple Watch ECG app, which checks for heart problems, which could make other hearing aid apps irrelevant.

Apple actually has two advantages, Live listening and conversation enhancement, which can basically turn AirPods into hearing aids on demand. But, as Bloomberg points out, these features have not yet been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Gorman writes that Apple is also working on a feature that will take your temperature through your ear canal. A reading from the ear canal is more accurate than temperatures taken from your wrist, which the Apple Watch Series 8 and Ultra models collect while users sleep.

Apple has reported tampering with AirPods to measure a wearer’s temperature for several years. The Wall Street Journal reported in 2021 that Apple was working on bringing in a Thermometer and blood pressure tool to the Apple Watch in the future and also on how to use the iPhone to detect Depression and cognitive decline.

But you may have to wait a while for temperature and hearing checks to take place. New health features may not arrive on AirPods for several months or even years, Gurman reports.

Gurman writes that the company also plans to introduce less expensive AirPod models and move to USB-C charging ports.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
