E-bikes are generally great, change how many people go from A to B, and can help you stay healthy or stay healthy (if you get off the throttle, at least). But oftentimes their designs don’t quite match up with the exhilaration of riding them. Engwe’s L20 and M20 e-bikes avoid this pitfall, so whether you’re a 16-year-old like my son or [redacted]- Your age is like my wife, you can ride something that looks cool and cool.
The two e-bikes are basically the same, although they look very different. The L20, a progressive commuter bike with chunky tyres, and the M20 a motorcycle in all but name. They are both great at what they do, and my family loves them both.

No adjustable seat needs more info on the bike computer
While I spent a lot of time testing e-bikes (And many other products), my wife rarely gets involved. We both have full-time jobs and several full-time kids, so our work rarely overlaps. When the L20 from Enjoy arrived, she was smitten. We intended to go out on rides together, and unfortunately most of the bikes I test are too big for them. For example, one of the bikes I’m testing is 4 feet 6 inches from floor to handlebar, so it doesn’t ride the same as the 5-foot-5. The L20 feels designed just for her, so she was excited to give it a try.

The M20 and L20 have the same 20×4-inch fat tires that work great in rain, mud, grass and road and the same Shimano 7-speed gearing system. Without using any of the e-bike features, the L20 is a much nicer bike to ride because it is much lighter than the larger M20. The L20’s stepped design also makes it a good choice for an infant seat because it is much easier to install. The L20 also comes with front and rear baskets, which makes it a true workhorse, especially with its range.
The M20 has two 13Ah batteries with a range of up to 47 miles each; Engwe claims the L20 has a maximum range of 90 miles on its single 13Ah battery. These numbers vary widely, of course, depending on how much you weigh and how much you use the pedal (PAS) or throttle to get you around. I’m 280 lbs., and in my testing, the L20 averaged about 70 miles of range on fairly flat terrain using the PAS in second level with the occasional use of the throttle when I got a little tired. My wife gets about the same mileage, but she also rides with our 5 year old on her back and a backpack on the front.

Stylistically, both bikes look great for different reasons. It is clear to me that the M20 is modeled after an army motorcycle of the 1940s. Even the placement of the batteries makes them look like gas tanks, and the large, spotty headlights add to that aesthetic. It’s a great looking bike that turns heads everywhere I go.
The bright pink L20 is also turning heads, mainly because of its striking pink color, but it’s shape is more efficient than the M20. Being able to pass through an e-bike is useful, especially when it has a basket on the back. None of the e-bikes are lightweight, so it’s much easier to balance if you don’t have to swing a leg on it.

Like I said, the M20 is more like a motorcycle, and that’s what it seems to want to ride, too. The PAS works well, but with a seat that isn’t adjustable, it’s hard to pedal comfortably, or at least for my 6-foot-1-inch frame. My 16 year old son is 5ft 6in and finds it most comfortable.
We recently reviewed a similar device, Super 73-R Adventure Series, and we didn’t find it particularly comfortable as a bike. The M20 has a similar problem—you can’t adjust the seat height—but it wins out over the Super 73 in many ways, not least of which is the price; Almost $2,000 cheaper. While our resident cyclist Russell Holley found the Super 73 difficult to use as a bike, the M20 works great for people of average height when pedaling, and even better for everyone on the throttle.
What I found surprising about the M20 was its range on the throttle alone. If I set the power level to two, I can use the throttle and get about 40 miles (about 38 on average) on a single battery. Factory specs for the M20 are 47 miles per battery, so getting that nearly on the throttle is impressive.
The motors on both bikes are located in the hub of the rear wheel, and you can feel that as you pedal, you are being pushed along, rather than the motors actually helping you pedal. Using the throttle is also the easiest way to bring yourself out of a stall. Torque on the L20 and M20 is good (50Nm and 55Nm respectively) so the power is immediately there when you twist the knob, although acceleration on the L20 is noticeably less than on the M20. Maybe the extra 5N.m in the M20 makes the difference, or maybe it’s how you sit, but when you crank the power up to level 5 and go full throttle, the M20 almost jumps away. It really feels like an electric motorcycle. It’s very exciting.

My only real gripe with Engwe’s L20 and M20 is the user interface on the bike computer. While it does explain everything you need to know such as speed, distance traveled, mileage total, and miles per hour, it just isn’t enough for me. A Bluetooth connection to a phone with an app to get a more detailed overview of my ride would be greatly appreciated.
Oddly enough, Engwe added a USB-A port on the M20’s batteries to charge the phone but omitted that from the L20. To fully charge the iPhone 14 takes 3 Ah from a bike battery — or about 10 miles of range — but as an emergency measure, you can easily charge your phone to 20% and still have plenty of power to get you home. It’s a shame the L20 doesn’t have the same feature, and I’d like to see that in other e-bikes moving forward.
Engwe L20 and M20: past and future collide
While these samples will soon be back to the manufacturer, the Engwe L20 and M20 changed how my family spent their free time during the review period. Now, instead of going solo for a test bike ride, my wife and I strap our toddler into the bike seat, my son uses one of our other bikes, and we all go for a bike ride together. We stop now and then to see the sights, but mostly we just walk around enjoying each other’s company. The M20 and L20 have a range that will allow us to drive for hours, and they look good while doing it, too.
