There are few things more difficult than bringing a little person into the world. When you’re trying to figure out what you need to put on your baby registry item list to be prepared for what that new baby life brings, the sheer amount of things to choose from can seem daunting to new parents — not to mention all of the different options for each of these “necessities.” “.

In fact, once your new baby is born, the products you spend hours gorging on won’t matter as much as you think. Babies really do need a few things (food, clothes, diapers, a safe place to sleep), and every baby is really different, with different preferences. Are any of these items really necessary? no. However, here are several baby records that must ultimately be key to my own parenting journey, and that I wish I’d known to sign up for instead of panic buying on Amazon in those early weeks. If you take one piece of advice from this list, do it like this: Invest in as many magnetic objects as your budget allows. These are pricey, but in my experience, totally worth it. There are no zippers, no buttons – just tiny magnetic buttons that allow you to quickly and easily open and close your child’s pajamas, perfect for those midnight changes. The fabric has a nice soft feel, almost silky, and there are plenty of cute patterns to choose from. (My kiddo also loves pop them, as they are easy to operate even with their arthritic hands.)
We brought our baby girl home from the hospital armed with several babies Swaddle Halo Sleeping Bag and blankets, only for the sake of which she would either break out or hate them all in general. She looked like she wanted to sleep with her hands up, so she ordered the Love to Dream swaddle. They instantly seemed more comfortable at nap time, and we stuck with them until they were ready to go (since you’re going up in size, there are “transition” options that let you zip up the sleeves). These swaddles also provide the added benefit of making your baby look like a flying squirrel.
Lactation consultants recommended that these bottles are the most similar in shape to a breast nipple, and the best to help improve baby’s latch. Easy to clean and fill in the cooler. Plus it’s a steal compared to the more expensive prices Comotomo bottles I had it in my registry. Although my toddler didn’t really have a preference for either, Evenflo was the one we stuck with.
What do you actually do with your newborn all day, when he’s not eating or sleeping (which, to be fair, he is most of the time)? This Baby Einstein mirror may not be the most aesthetically pleasing, but my baby girl loved it – giving her a way to look at herself and some high contrast patterns that made tummy time so much easier for us early days. She also loved looking at the high contrast animal cards, which would make her smile.
Speaking of tummy time, once your baby turns three months old, this water mat will help make this activity more engaging and interesting. It’s basically a small water bed for kids, and it gives them a different kind of feel while they’re on their tummies, and something to look at with the floating fish. You can also try supporting it in different ways using the inflatable sides. It helped us extend our stomach sessions a bit.
Between spit up, exploding diapers and messy milk intake, newborns can get dirty pretty quickly. For the moments when you don’t want to take a full shower (or those fun times when one of the above happens right after you shower), it’s a good idea to have Johnson’s head-to-toe baby wipes on hand. It’s just that, pre-moistened, soft, hypoallergenic baby wipes that let you clean quickly.
Really, the goal here is to sign up for more burp cloths than you ever imagined. Our baby spits up frequently, and we have burp cloths strewn around the house at all times. This Hanna Andersson is cute and soft, and just a little bit bigger than her Burt’s bee which I had on my registry, for about the same price.
I registered for an old membership baby nail clipperI think I know how to cut nails, how hard is that? At least for me, it wasn’t necessarily difficult, but scary—newborns are capricious, and their nails are so tiny, that I was terrified to even approach them with scissors. Not to mention, newborns’ nails grow incredibly fast and need to be cut often, so as not to scratch your wolverine’s face during training. This battery-powered electric nail clipper is a lifesaver: It has three different age-specific attachments for kids (and some for adults too), a light so you can see what you’re doing, and two speeds in each direction. You can even walk away while your baby sleeps (weird but true, at least in my case).
This one is for the parents. I naively thought I’d be able to fit all of my nursing/pumping stuff into a cute little caddy. I was very wrong. A small storage cart like this one will actually hold everything you need, like a pump, extra pump parts, snacks, a water bottle, burp cloths and anything else you’ll need (and shout out to the postpartum nurse and Instagram influencer Carey Lusher for the idea). And you can move it from room to room so you’re not trapped on the couch all the time.
This is an honorable mention because it was already on my record after a friend’s recommendation. If you are someone who hates having your hands sticky, then you need this tool that can really only be called a butt spoon. Put your baby’s diaper cream on this little silicone brush and apply it to his bottom, saving your hands from the mess. It has a suction cup holder so it can sit on the diaper table on its own, and it’s easy to clean.
