The source code segment was leaked by someone with the GitHub profile name of Free speaker, which appears to be an indirect play on Musk’s repeated claims that he is “the tyranny of free speech.” However, it is not clear if the alleged employee was among the thousands who were fired shortly after Musk took over Company owner and CEO. Notably, Musk’s mercurial leadership style that required a serious work ethic did not universally make a good impression among current and former employees. So far, there have been no reports of the source code part being exploited by bad actors.
Twitter will open all code used to recommend tweets on March 31
– Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 17, 2023
Interestingly, Musk recently promised that Twitter would open source a portion of its code that powers the content recommendation algorithm. The idea behind this step is to enhance transparency so that people can get an idea of why they see what they see on Twitter. However, Musk may backtrack on Twitter’s open source efforts. Citing anonymous sources, prof ZDNet says the report Musk fired the staff which was overseeing Twitter’s planned migration toward a more open operating approach.
