The NASA rover has a new pet rock for riding

This story is part of Welcome to Mars, our series exploring the Red Planet.

NASA’s Perseverance rover turns into a Mars rock-sharing ride. In early 2022, it was released The rover picked up a rock in the left front wheel. That rock is still there, but the rover now appears to have a new friend, a larger boulder that has found its way to Percy’s right front wheel.

Astrophotographer Simeon observed the new rock’s suns in late February Chirp mosaic picture of both rocks At the front wheels as seen are Percy’s left and right hazard avoidance cameras mounted low on the rover.

early last year @employee The rover picked up Pet’s rock with its left front wheel.
All that time she must have been quite alone, but yesterday she met a friend who jumped into the right front wheel to give her some company. 🙂

HazCams help monitor the terrain the rover traverses, are also useful for monitoring wheels, and as it turns out, they monitor rock hikers. It appears that a new freeloading tool has made its debut in File The rover returned the initial image on February 27. The camera, though very shady, got close. View of the rock on March 1.

The oldest Percy rock traveled with the rover for many miles and witnessed the collection of rock samples and creation The first sample repository in another world. One of the main goals of the Perseverance mission is to help us understand whether Mars hosted microbial life. Delivery of the probe’s collection of samples to Earth for closer study in the future Mars sample return The mission is an essential part of this effort.

The new wheel rock may stay around, or it may end up falling out as Perseverance advances through Jezero Crater. NASA wasn’t worried about the original rocks, Saying last year that the widget was “It is not seen as dangerous.” NASA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mars is a well-known rocky place, as is its sister rover Curiosity its rough wheels can testify. NASA redesigned Percy’s aluminum wheels to withstand the rigors of driving through an inhospitable terrain.

Perhaps the lesson here is that the real treasure in Mars exploration is the rock-solid friends we make along the way.
