Jeep’s iconic Wrangler SUV received a host of updates and revisions for the 2024 model year at the 2023 New York Auto Show this week. But, as a fan of electrified cars, I am more interested in the reviews on Plug-in hybrid wrangler 4xe. Joining the lineup this year will be a new Sport S 4xe trim level with a lower starting price that should help cement the Wrangler 4xe’s claim as “America’s best-selling PHEV.” Additionally, the update brings new equipment, features, and options to all Wrangler 4xe models.
All 2024 Jeep Wranglers, PHEV or not, feature refreshed styling inside and out, but it’s a subtle design. Non-loyals probably won’t even notice the refinement without the side-by-side look, but Jeep faithful may notice a slight modification to the classic seven-slot grille and rounded fascia that are Wrangler’s trademark hallmarks, with different treatments for each available trim level.

According to Jeep, “4xe is the new 4×4.”

The new Sport S 4xe model joins the PHEV lineup of Wranglers at the entry point with packaging similar to the conventional non-hybrid Wrangler Sport S 4×4 model. Jeep promises it will come with a lower starting price than currently available on PHEV models, but it hasn’t announced specific pricing yet. That takes some wind from the “affordable PHEV” sails—but the new model will be cheaper than the current $56,530 price tag (including the $1,795 destination fee) and that’s a good thing.
The PHEV SUV’s powertrain has not changed after the update and still combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 100-kW hybrid system to produce 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque via a standard eight-speed automatic transmission and drivetrain. Quadruple. The PHEV’s 400-volt, 17-kWh lithium-ion battery provides about 22 miles of battery-powered range on a full charge, after which drivers can expect average efficiency at around 49 mph.
Uconnect’s new 12.3-inch screen will be a welcome addition to our 4x pavement. Hopefully it’s durable enough for the trail, too.

Inside, the Wrangler 4xe will be equipped with a new 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen infotainment system—the largest display ever available in a Wrangler body—with wireless connectivity from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s sure to be a welcome upgrade for the more style-conscious Wrangler drivers.
Also new for 2024 is the Jeep 4xe Power Box, a 120-volt AC inverter system that adds four NEMA 5-15 outlets to the cabin that share 30 amps of power. Jeep says the Power Box will allow Wrangler PHEV drivers to quickly charge devices, such as tablets and laptops, and tools while on the go.
Besides announcing the updates, Jeep has also emphasized its goal of offering Fully electrified lineup (including hybrid cars, plug-in hybrids and battery electric cars) by 2025, it will be 50% of all-electric Jeep sales by 2030.
