What is the best electric lawn mower overall?
From price to performance to add-ons, there is a lot to consider when purchasing a new mower. This is in addition to a lot Electric lawnmower deals It can make shopping a little intimidating.
During testing, I found that there was a lot of variance in how well electric lawn mowers performed versus how advertised they were, and how well battery mowers performed compared to corded electric lawn mowers or gas mowers. In addition, it is not only the initial performance that is important.
Before splurging on one of these devices, you’ll want to consider the types of batteries they use. Some mowers rely on batteries which also power popular brands Household electrical appliances. DeWalt, EGO, and Ryobi are good examples of this kind of mutual compatibility. If you already own tools from one of these or similar brands, you may not have to spend the extra money on additional hardware.
With these factors in mind, we chose the EGO Power Plus, because it rivals the power of standard gas mowers without sacrificing in quality or capacity. Not only is it easy to use, but it also has noteworthy features, such as its 21-inch wide cutting platform and 56-volt battery that works with the entire EGO line of yard power tools.
If you’re looking for an electric lawn mower this year, you’re in luck. I’ve rounded up a selection of some of the most popular battery-powered electric lawn mowers on the market today. I stuck to the push-back-only models, which cost anywhere from $250 to $550. Then I disassembled, assembled and personally put each unit through its paces. After the grass clippings had settled in from my lawn mowing spree, these were my top picks.
The best electric lawn mowers of 2023
Anyone who doubts that electric mowers can’t compete with the power of gas models hasn’t used an EGO. At 62.6 pounds, this machine is one of the largest and heaviest machines in my test group. However, the EGO Power Plus was definitely the most attractive. Whether it’s cutting grass or raking through low brush, this mower works like a tank. And where other smaller mowers broke down, they were simply unstoppable.
Despite its heft, the EGO Power Plus was an easy ride to drive around the yard. I found it fast and stable too. I also appreciated that I could run its variable speed motor without having to spin the mower blade. Other noteworthy features include a 21-inch wide cutting platform and a 56-volt battery that works with the full EGO line of yard power tools.

Just because a lawn mower isn’t self-propelled doesn’t mean it’s difficult to use. Case in point: the Ryobi 16″ One Plus HP 18V Push Mower. Even though it’s very compact and weighs only 34.5 pounds, this little machine packs a punch. It stopped shorter than some of the larger, more powerful mowers in my test group, and the Ryobi’s light weight made it easy for me to push.
This device uses standard 18V Ryobi rechargeable batteries as well. They’re the same lithium-ion power packs the company uses in its popular line of home power tools. The mower comes with two batteries plus a charger — in case one isn’t sitting around.
However, the cutting width of 16 inches is on the narrow side. However, for those with smaller yards (a quarter of an acre or less), the surprising power of this mower will suit their needs just fine.
While the Hart Cordless 40V Brushless Mower doesn’t have the raw cutting power of other electric pushers, it’s no slouch either. This lawn mower’s blades never broke down during our trimming test. It also powers through a low-challenge brush without choking.
Despite offering a cutting width of 20 inches, the 52-pound machine felt relatively light. It is not self-propelled, so pushing the mower uphill is a challenge. However, the mower’s low price and solid performance make it compelling for budget shoppers. The 40-volt pair of batteries and charger are compatible with the Hart Power Tools range, sweetening the deal.
Other electric lawn mowers we’ve tested
DeWalt 21.5 in. 20V Max.
Chris Monroe/CNET
Dewalt 20 volt max
I had high hopes for this Dewalt mower because of its large size, steel construction, and Dewalt’s long history of making power tools. However, on the field, her performance was disappointing. The Dewalt 21.5-inch 20-Volt MAX often stalled because of cutting grass that got caught between the mower blade and the tire sidewall. Adding insult to injury is the mower’s relatively high $499 price tag.
Ryobi 21-Inch 40V Brushless Self-Propelled Mower.
Chris Monroe/CNET
Ryobi 21 Inch 40V Brushless
Near the EGO in terms of power, speed, and cutting ability, the Ryobi 21-inch mower handled well on our test lawn. It slowed down a few times, but quickly recovered and didn’t stop once. Even below the Ryobi’s $587 price tag, the more powerful EGO is a better buy.
Kobalt 40 Volt Max 20-Inch Cordless Push Electric Mower.
Chris Monroe/CNET
Kobalt 40 Volt Max
Light for its size, this 56-pound mower isn’t self-propelled but it was easy to push. However, its underside got clogged a few times during our tests. Its battery also takes some force to snap into place.
Greenworks G-MAX 40V 16-Inch Cordless Lawn Mower.
Chris Monroe/CNET
Greenworks G-MAX 40V
Compact and lightweight, this model from Greenworks performed well. It didn’t stop during testing and was easy to push through the grass. However, the battery installed inside the mower rests on the upper inner edge of its socket. This makes it more difficult to insert compared to other devices.
Lawn Mower The Sun Joe 24V-X2-17LM 48-volt 17-inch Walk Behind Lawn Mower.
Chris Monroe/CNET
Sun Joe 24V – X2-17LM – 48V
This model of Sun Joe may be light and easy to push. If you’re walking too fast, the mower can get stuck with lawn trimmers. You also have to insert the device’s batteries into their sockets at an angle that isn’t as intuitive as it should be.

How we tested electric lawn mowers
To test each lawnmower, I chose a single, flat area of grass within a CNET Smart Home lawn. With all mower batteries fully charged, I set the cutting height of each mower to position #4 (a higher number means greater cutting height). Then, I used each machine to mow at least four full rows (15 feet) of grass in both directions, with a 180-degree turn between each row.
Some mowers like the Cobalt here can get stuck by grass clippings.
Brian Bennett/CNET
I paid close attention to whether the mowers stopped, engaged, or suffered in any way while cutting. I also ran the same test with a low brush section on the outside edge of the lawn. This was a torture test for the high-powered models, and a good way to decide which mowers are really worth your money.
