While earbuds with ear hooks may not be for everyone, you can’t deny that they add an extra level of security. While the buds may fall out of your ears, the hooks keep them attached to your head, preventing you from losing them or having them fall to the sidewalk, which can do some damage. This is an important feature, especially if you wear the earphones while running or cycling.
Here’s a look at the best earphones with ear hooks, all of which we’ve tested. Most are affordable, with costing under $100. We’ll update this list as new sports earphones hit the market.

The new Soundcore Sport X10 has an interesting design with rotating ear hooks that swivel up when you’re using them and flip down when you want to put them in their charging case, which has a smaller footprint than a lot of headphones with ear hooks.
As long as you get a tight seal, they sound good, with punchy, punchy bass and good detail. They also have active noise cancellation, which is effective although not as good as Sony’s or Bose’s noise cancellation. It’s also completely waterproof with an IPX7 rating, which means it can be fully submerged in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes. Battery life is rated at up to 8 hours with three additional charges in the charging case.

JBL has upgraded its earhook-style sport earbuds for 2023. Available in black or white, the Endurance Peak 3 earbuds offer better battery life (up to 10 hours with four additional charges in their case) improved audio calling performance and an IP68 rating that makes them water resistant Completely dustproof. They also have an Ambient Aware transparency mode and a Talk Thru mode that can automatically lower the volume of music and open up the speakers to the outside world. This means that you can have a conversation with someone without removing the headphones from your ears.
They stayed on my ears very securely while running and I thought they sounded pretty good, even though they had a bit of a bass boost (I mean they have a solid bass). Just be aware that if you don’t get an airtight seal, the sound quality will be much worse. Also, like other earphones with earhook designs, the case is on the beefy side. Still, the buds feel sturdy, and if you get a good fit, they’re an excellent (and less expensive) alternative to the Beats Powerbeats Pro. I also though the touch controls worked well and I was easily able to switch between sound modes.

The Beats Powerbeats Pro headphones have been on the market for a few years but are still popular and are now available in several color options. Their bulky charging case is a notable drawback, but it offers many of the same features as Apple’s AirPods 2 (it’s equipped with an Apple H1 chip) but has better sound as long as you get a snug seal (it should fit most – but not all – good ears). ). There’s no active noise cancellation but the battery life is solid, with up to 9 hours and it’s splash resistant to the IPX4 standard.

With so many new wireless earphones and headphones being launched seemingly on a weekly basis, it is not easy for companies to differentiate their products in the market. Skullcandy hopes its new voice-activated platform, Skull-iQ Smart Feature Technology, will do just that. Similar to the “Hey Siri” feature of the Apple AirPods, the Skullcandy version lets you say “Hey, Skullcandy” to issue voice commands without touching a button. The Skull-iQ debuted sporting the Push Active, $100 Grind Fuel, which will be firmware updateable via the Skullcandy app.
With the earhook design, they’re basically an affordable version of the Beats Powerbeats Pro and they fit my ears a little better than the Powerbeats Pro. I’m not usually a fan of ear-hook style buds, but this is one of the best.
The Push Active True Earbuds are equipped with Bluetooth 5.2, are IP55 splash resistant, have Tile Finding technology, and are rated for up to 10 hours of battery life on a single charge at moderate volume levels.
The Cleer Epic Arc buds are similar to Bose’s open-top sport earphones (see below) but are actually more comfortable to wear thanks to a rotating hinge. Like the Bose buds, they rest on the top of your ear just above the ear canal and blast sound into your ears. They’re open so they let in ambient sound (a plus if you’re a runner or biker and want to hear traffic), but the 16.2mm drivers deliver ample bass and volume. They don’t sound as good as the Bose Open Sport Earbuds but they come pretty close.
I liked the case, which is a little big but very thin. While it has a built-in USB charging cable (that’s nice), like the Bose Open Sport Earbuds case, it doesn’t have a rechargeable battery, so it’s basically a charging dock for the earbuds, which are also available in black. The battery life is rated at up to 7 hours and it is splash resistant to IPX5 standard.
Some of these types of earphones have physical control buttons but they do have touch controls. I found they work well but not very well. The buds have a companion app that allows you to upgrade the firmware and tweak the sound profile.

While the Tribit MoveBuds H1 only sound decent, not fancy, there is a lot to like about them. It feels rugged and is completely waterproof with an IPX8 rating. They also have a very long battery life—up to 15 hours—and support Qualcomm’s AptX audio codec. Many Android smartphones offer AptX Bluetooth streaming.
