What power supply do you need for the RTX 40 series graphics cards?

Nvidia issues official wattage recommendations for each of its graphics cards, although technically those recommendations only apply to its Founders Edition graphics cards. Fortunately, Nvidia’s board partners usually follow suit. However, if you are buying a card made by another GPU maker, such as MSI or Gigabyte, be sure to check that the recommended PSU is the same as listed below.

For the RTX 4090, which has 450 watts total graphic power (TGP) that can go to a maximum of 600 watts, Nvidia recommends at least an 850 watt power supply. Depending on the rest of your machine, it might be safer to buy a better PSU, though – if you’re using one of the intel or The best AMD processors Along with a host of other high-end components, you can even purchase a 1000W PSU to leave some breathing room. Most PC builders will recommend Gold or Platinum PSUs at this point, and ATX 3.0 should be the standard to go at this point.

Moving up to the RTX 4080, which has a more conservative 320W TGP, the recommended PSU drops to 750W. Again, it might be best to leave some extra room here, especially if you’re looking to overclock.

The RTX 4070 Ti has 285W TGP and calls for a 700W power supply, while the RTX 4070 settles for 600W. However, realistically, if you can afford to buy a new PSU, it might be worth aiming for 700 watts instead of 600 watts.
