Music lovers flock to services like Deezer and Tidal, but the big tech giants have caught up. Apple Music offers Lossless Music for free. Amazon also provides a similar benefit for Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers. Spotify, the largest player in the music streaming industry, will not distribute HD music streaming features for free.
As for why Spotify is a late entrant in this segment, licensing hassles seem to be to blame. “Yeah, I mean, a lot of the features that we talk about especially the music-related ones end up being licensed,” Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said during last year’s earnings call when asked why the Hi-Fi category still lags.
Right now, Spotify’s most profitable selling point with its Hi-Fi layer is its extensive music library. However, it’s not clear whether Spotify will offer its entire music catalog in a lossless format with the most expensive Premium subscription, or will only upgrade a limited portion. In addition, we do not have any specific information regarding the sound depth and bitrate that Spotify Hi-Fi will offer.
No matter when Spotify’s “Supremium” tier arrives, it won’t have an easy road ahead. Spotify Premium is $9.99 per month, while Tidal’s Hi-Fi streaming tier also starts at $9.99 in the USA. Amazon Music Unlimited, which promises better than CD-quality lossless audio streaming (up to 24-bit, 192kHz), starts at $8.99 for US-based subscribers.
