2023 Aston Martin DB12 First Drive: Reputation Reboot

The danger of trying to make all things in all driving situations, and bringing in the technology required to deliver just that, is that purity can be overshadowed by complexity. Then there is the paradox that the closer you get to perfection, the less personality you can get. The DB12 needs to be good, but it also needs to feel like an Aston Martin in the process.

Do not worry. The DB12 engineers have undoubtedly been busy, but out on the detouring roads of the south of France Aston Martin has invited SlashGear to test its latest model, the power curve and transmission being the most obvious place for their efforts. Hit the gas and there’s a very short – but noticeable – pause, an anticipatory horde of horses and twisting, before the elegant coupe darts you happily forward.

Aston Martin could have changed its masseur’s gearbox with an unimaginable drink. Instead, it intentionally ramps up aggression—”shifting like an event,” as the car’s head of engineering puts it—and the result is a distinctly mechanical stab that permeates aggressive driving. Yes, it’s eminently possible to glance and realize you’re comfortably over the speed limit without realizing it, but even if you prefer the V8 engine and the occasional exhaust noise, the DB12 does an excellent job of reminding you that you’re driving fast.
