A multi-purpose jet aircraft from the Cold War

The Yak-28 came in several versions which allowed it to become one of the most versatile crafts in the Soviet Union’s ammunition during the Cold War. NATO codenames indicated variants with Brewer being the bomber, Maestro for the trainer, and Firebar for the interceptor. Given its service history of 1960, the Yak-28 had not seen combat, but that didn’t stop the Soviet Union from rolling out more and more models.

Speaking of variables, they are divided into further subcategories. The Brewer software, as just one example, came with five different versions ranging from Brewer-A all the way up to the Brewer-E designation, all with more features than the previous one. Brewer-E had an estimated 30 users in 1986, down from Brewer-D’s 150, so it doesn’t necessarily mean they completely replaced one another. For variants with combat capabilities, you have to look at Firebar. These flew in pairs and came with two air-to-air missiles each.

As of today, the Yak-28 line of aircraft is no longer in active service. However, the legacy lives on, as the Yak-28 bomber variant is a playable aircraft in the free video game “War Thunder”, along with many other ships, planes and tanks from the Cold War era.
