For 2005, a heavily modified version of the 996 was released, the 997, which redesigned the 911 closer to its roots. There were no huge leaps during this generation, but Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) made its debut on some models, as did the “PDK” dual-clutch automatic transmission that was perfectly suited to manual shifting. The Porsche Sports Exhaust (PSE) was also available, allowing drivers to change the exhaust from a quieter note to a louder, deeper note by distance.
In 2012, Porsche unveiled the most advanced and technologically advanced 911 ever. It was longer and wider than any 911 before it, and it gained interior comfort while not sacrificing the nimble handling that Porsche is known for. The manual transmission has seven forward speeds, a first for any car from any manufacturer.
The removable “Targa” roof panel has been a staple of the 911 lineup for decades, but the sixth-generation 991 enhanced the experience with an all-rear window cantilever mechanism to allow the roof panel to retract behind the rear seat—all without effort from the car’s occupants.
Technology we now take for granted started filtering into the 911, including us Apple CarPlay and driver assistance features such as automatic emergency braking and forward collision avoidance. The 991’s final party trick was an optional steerable rear axle, which helped the seventh-generation car lap around the famous Nürburgring 10 seconds faster than the outgoing model.
