We started hearing rumors about a Meta product called Threads years ago, but we’ve only gotten a pretty good idea of what to expect in recent months. Official screenshots of the Themes app were leaked in early June, and the Android listing for the app was published just days ago Soon after through the list of iOS apps. A number of people managed to download the Android app via apk in the wild before it was released, but any attempts to log into the service were blocked, as users were given an alert that their account did not have the required permission to access the themes.
With the app now official in multiple markets, former Twitter users who left ship under Elon Musk — as well as those simply waiting for the next best thing to arrive — have a new option that comes with one huge advantage: It’s familiar. unlike mastodon, which is still confusing to many people, and platforms like Bluesky still limited themes are widely available and linked to Instagram, a social media app that you likely already have installed on your phone. Plus, with a Meta behind the product, the odds of it sticking around are good — unlike some competing startup platforms that might struggle to get the financial backing you need for a successful product.
