Meta Says Threads Will Be Part of Fediverse: Heres What That Means

At the heart of the universe are protocols. Meta says that threads support the “ActivityPub” protocol so that they can be accommodated within the universe. Developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), ActivityPub allows for a federation that basically serves the same formula as social networking platforms, but with a lot more freedom and no limits to centralization.

Collectively, the systems built on the foundations of ActivityPub make up the federated universe. At present, themes exist as a social media platform like Instagram or Facebook. But in the federated universe, it would exist as a server, among hundreds of others.

Although these servers have their own unique set of rules and policies, each will be able to communicate with each other – there is no walled garden. You can take account on topics, but you can still publish and interact with the content on another server such as Mastodon. Essentially, you can visualize the federated universe as an interconnected network of online social corners.

The closest example of such an ecosystem would be email. It doesn’t matter if you have a Gmail account, or if you use Outlook, you can still send and receive messages from a Yahoo account. All of this happens with interoperable protocols, just like ActivityPub, which connects federated servers. At the moment, the threads are not part of the federation, but they will soon be. When that happens, threads and mastodons will technically become interoperable.
