The USS Kitty Hawk arrived in 1960. It was designed with an architecture more conducive to storing, operating, and deploying the aircraft it would work with in coordination. Unlike some military endeavors, this one was far from an old-fashioned ship before it began: the iconic Kitty Hawk excelled in conflict.
The crew of the Kitty Hawk and Carrier Air Wing Eleven played such a pivotal role in the fiercest fighting of the Vietnam War that in January of 1969 they were honored with the Presidential Unit Citation. Decades later, in the early 2000s, it proved to be an important launch pad for operations during operations such as Operation Southern Watch during the Iraq War. However, the venerable ship could not serve forever.
Kitty Hawk finally retired in 2009. Needless to say, companies like this have progressed exponentially during their lifetime. There were no others in use still powered by oil. So this very special ship was not destined to simply rust, memories of her past service fading away. Instead, it was to be broken up for scrap.
On January 15, 2022, US Naval Institute Share details of Kitty Hawk’s lesser-known fate on Twitter. “Today the USS Kitty Hawk begins her final voyage from Bremerton to a Texas junkyard,” the tweet read. “Kitty Hawk sold to scrap company for a bargain price of 1 cent.”
