The older MW07 and MW07 Plus from Master & Dynamic delivered first-rate sound for true wireless calling, but they were a little lacking in the features department and weren’t great for making calls. The MW08 offers some significant improvements, including the addition of solid noise cancellation and call quality, making it one of the best models of 2023. Sadly, it’s pricey at $299 (the more durable MW08 Sport, which looks like it is, is $349). .
Battery life improves slightly (up to about 12 hours of battery life at 50% volume vs. 10 hours for the MW07 Plus), earbuds have Bluetooth 5.2, active noise cancellation with three microphones on each earbud (noise reduction during calls doesn’t measure up to the AirPods Pro, but the overall call quality has improved). Noise cancellation on the MW07 Plus was very poor; MW08’s are much more effective.
You can choose two levels of noise cancellation in the new M&D Connect app for iOS and Android, as well as two levels of transparency that let you hear the outside world. The app currently has no way to tweak the sound profile (I’m OK with that because the sound profile is quite suitable for my tastes), and the earbuds have a physical button on each earbud to control playback, not touch controls.
The earbuds may not fit everyone’s ear equally, but they sure have a premium look, as well as excellent sound and a great listening experience if you can get a tight seal. (I was able to get a secure fit with the larger end.) They offer more of an acoustic sound profile, with smooth, balanced sound and well-defined bass. This model has new 11mm drivers, which add a little punch to the bass and a touch of better clarity. The MW08 works well with all kinds of music.
The MW08 is available in a variety of color options for $300, like its predecessors, and includes a premium stainless steel charging case (charges via USB-C) that’s small but holds more weight than typical bud cases. I prefer the matte finishes of the cases that come with the black and blue versions, and you also get a secondary case for safekeeping. (Yes, the charging case can get scratched if you leave it in a bag.)
The MW08s now support both aptX and AAC audio codecs, with an extended range of over 20 meters, according to Master & Dynamic. They have an IPX5 (splash-resistant) rating, and multipoint Bluetooth pairing, so you can pair them simultaneously with two devices.
