Having a home office is essential, not only for working professionals but also for students, crafters, gamers, and just about anyone else. Every home should have at least one office. You may work from home, or need a place to do your homework. Maybe you’re a gamer and you want to get into Twitch broadcasting. All of the aforementioned ambitions require a comfortable workspace to succeed.

I’ve spent hours building desks, moving desks and sitting on desks and on desks, all to give you information on the best things around. I keep getting more too, so watch this space for more of the best desks when they arrive.
I’ve used a lot of desks over the course of my career, but I can honestly say I’ve never used a desk quite like the Magnus Pro XL. It is at once the most industrial looking table, while also giving huge energy to the player. Measuring 70 inches tall and made almost exclusively of metal parts, this desk is not intended for one-person assembly. It took me almost 2 hours to put it all together, but once done, it’s a work of art.
It has a five-position upright system, and the motors are some of the quietest I’ve heard in testing. Movement is smooth, and even though the desk weighs a lot, it lifts up quickly and without hassle. I’d never considered using a standing desk for gaming before, but it really helps break up the hours sitting.
At first glance, the branch’s standing desk appears somewhat generic, but the level of craftsmanship is evident upon closer inspection. All materials feel premium, with weight only coming from good engineering.
This lightweight writing desk is very similar to many of the others I’ve tested. Writing desks tend to be easy to assemble – this took me 10 minutes – and they’re compact. It can comfortably hold one monitor and a laptop, but not much.

Most standing desks have a clinical look as if they were designed to be in a dull office rather than in your home. Not so with the mid-century standing desk. Its design with a dark wood top, black drawer fronts, and antique gold handles exudes an air of 1950s sophistication.
The standing desk part works well, too, with four programmable heights and a sturdy construction that feels secure even at full extension. I especially love the center tray that can fit a wireless keyboard and mouse to hide them from view and preserve the mid-century aesthetic.

The Branch Duo is the company’s newest line of standing desks and uses a very simple control mechanism to select heights. The screen is simple and clean, and all accessories are of high quality. Construction was simple, took less than 30 minutes, and the size is perfect for smaller spaces. It’s big enough for two smaller monitors or a large monitor, with plenty of room on top for a laptop.
I particularly like the notifications you can set to remind you to get up or sit down throughout the day. Standing desks are designed to help keep you healthy, but they only work if you remember to do so! The Branch Duo eliminates this problem.
Other desks we tested
Not every desk we test makes it to our best list. Some of them are not good enough to get a mention. Although some come close to being good enough we are willing to mention them here. These desks had something wrong with them that kept them off the top spot, but it’s fine if you can overlook the specific problem.
This desk from Homary looks great when it’s all put together. The glossy white finish and antique gold accents give the $1,500 desk a luxurious feel. All of the individual parts have the weight you’d expect from an executive item, and once you put them together, they look absolutely stunning.
Gaming desks are often very expensive, especially when you add extras. This desk from Monoprice is simple, cheap, and stable—all good things—and it also has some nifty extras like a headphone hook, cable-management tray, and cup holder off the desktop. Placing your drink on the side of the desk is a great idea. If you drop it, it will be on the floor, not on the expensive electronics on your desk.

How do we test
Test desks are a subjective game. Tests, like office chairs, are based on comfort, reliability, and ease of setup rather than things you can test in electronics like wattage and battery usage. I’m still testing each thoroughly, and will continue to test them for longevity in the coming months.
I tested these desks by asking three people to try each one on. They each used the office for at least 16 hours and then gave me their impressions. All three were six feet one inch; 5 ft 8 in; and 5 feet 4 inches, respectively to give me a good cross-section for the user’s average height.

Setup time and package quality
Building offices is often difficult and time consuming. For each desk, I timed how long it took to unpack and collect the contents of each desk, and noted whether the guide was easy to follow. I followed the instructions as closely as possible in order for each build to be done as if I had never built one before. I also carefully checked the packaging, to make sure it was undamaged, and if it was secure enough to hold the desk it was in. No damage was noted, and photos were sent to the manufacturers for review.
structural integrity
Modern desks must be able to support a good amount of weight. If you’re at a writing desk, you might only have a small laptop, but if you’re at a gaming desk, it probably has two monitors and a giant gaming PC too. For each desk, I checked the maximum load specification, and tried to match that to the materials we actually use on our desks.
I used:
Heavy gaming computer tower: two 27″ gaming monitors on a dual monitor arm, one MacBook Pro, two different keyboards, assorted mice and gamepads Oculus Quest 2My phone stand, USB hub, podcast microphone, and headphones
Depending on the height and weight of the desk, I mix and match these items, then check for any dent in the top or inconsistencies in the feel of the desk as I work.

wiggle
This is kind of a throwback to when my dad used to make furniture. My mom will criticize anything my dad built, and if it doesn’t work out, she’ll say “It’s a little wobbly, isn’t it, honey?” Once I build each desk and load it up for normal use, I’ll check it for wobbles. This means rocking it from side to side and front and back to make sure all the nails, screws, and fixtures keep everything rigid.
